Blu, full name Tyler Blu Gunderson, is the main protagonist of the Rio franchise. He falsely believed the last male blue macaw to ever exist since Marcel and the smugglers he leads made the rest of them go extinct.
He is also the husband of Jewel, the father of Carla, Bia, and Tiago and the son-in-law of Eduardo.
He is voiced by Jesse Eisenberg.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Even though he was involved in a traumatic past involving humans, unlike Jewel, he never became misanthropic and was very respectful towards humans.
- Despite being bullied by two geese over his inability to fly, Blu ignores them and does not let their taunting get the best of him.
- He saved Jewel from Nigel and again when she fell out of the plane.
- He rescued and freed the rest of the birds from their cages.
- He defeated Nigel by strapping a fire extinguisher to his leg and launching him out of the plane.
- He never shows any hostility towards anyone who mocked him for his inability to fly and domesticated life. Even as Jewel constantly antagonized him for these qualities, he doesn't let it get the best of him or lash out at her.
- Upon hearing that Nigel has captured Jewel, he wastes no time in orchestrating a plan to save her.
- Even when he sees Linda and has an opportunity to go home, he chooses to focus on saving Jewel instead.
- He tries to adapt to his species' way of life for Jewel and their kids' sake. Even though he snaps, it's not without reason (Jewel's stern father disapproves of him, especially when Blu's well-intentioned mistakes cost the blue macaw tribe victory against the scarlet macaws for the Brazil nut grove) and he eventually chooses living in the jungle over urban life in Rio.
- He helped save the Amazon rainforest from Big Boss.
- He teamed up with Red, Chuck, and the Blues from the Angry Birds media franchise along with Jewel to defeat Nigel and his fellow marmosets.
