Unown (Japanese: アンノーン, Hepburn: Annoon) (un-KNOWN[1]) is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Unown is a flat, thin Pokémon shaped like an eye with appendages that make it resemble a letter of the Latin alphabet or a punctuation mark. It is entirely black, except for its large white eye with a small, black pupil. Despite having an eye, they don't blink. They come in 28 different forms, 26 resembling each letter of the Latin alphabet as well as a question mark and an exclamation point. The letter Unown have fully open eyes but the punctuation mark Unown have eyes that are only half-open, to mark the end of a sentence. Unown is said to resemble ancient writing and hieroglyphs. It is a mystery whether Unown predates or postdates written language, and therefore which one is based on the other.
Behavior[]
Unown rarely leave their home dimension. Together, a large amount of them can produce enough psychic power to reshape reality based on the dreams of whoever summoned them.
Evolution[]
Unown does not evolve whatsoever.

Trivia[]
- Unown's Pokémon Gold and Silver art is in the form of Unown G. Its current artwork starting in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is that of Unown F. These two forms make the initials of Game Freak, the company that develops the mainline Pokémon games.
- Their home dimension was the battleground for Palkia and Dialga's fight; many of them can be seen fleeing from their fight in the beginning of the 10th movie.
- The only move Unown can learn is Hidden Power.
- In Super Smash Bros., Unown is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. When this happens, the one that appeared from the ball summons a vast flock of Unown to fly across the battlefield, each one doing minor damage to any players they strike.
- However, Unown is unable to learn Take Down in any form of main game.
- Unown and Ditto are the only genderless Pokémon that are not Legendary or Mythical, can not evolve, and also can't be hatched from eggs.
- In Pokémon Crystal, there is a rare chance that a wild Unown will flee.
- In both Pokémon-Amie and Pokémon Refresh, none of the Unown forms like being pet on their eye.
- Unown is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 336.
- The Unown that live on the Sevii Islands resemble Braille.
- In the third movie, photographs of Unown resembling Greek and Cyrillic characters can be seen.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, the wild Unown that can be found and recruited in Aegis Cave gives only 20-21 experience points when defeated. This is possibly to make it less likely that the player will level-up in Aegis Cave, seeing as he or she will be fighting a large number of them to collect the stones required to unlock the rooms and get through the dungeon and seeing as it is a mandatory dungeon in the story.
- Unown never appears as the client of a job mission in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky. This is likely because the "Adventure Log" records the player's first encounter with Unown. As a result, it is impossible to unlock this achievement prior to unlocking Aegis Cave in the game.
- Unown has 28 unique forms, making it the most forms until Generation VIII, when Alcremie was introduced with 63 unique forms.
- In the Trading Card Game, each Unown form has a different meaning (please refer to the chart below).
Origin[]
Each Unown form is based on a letter from the modern Latin alphabet as well as two punctuation marks: exclamation mark and question mark. Their relative weakness may be due to the fact that individual letters and punctuation on their own have little to no meaning, but when together, are able to form words and have much more meaning.
Etymology[]
Unown and Annōn come from the word "unknown." Annōn may also come from "anonymous."
