Synopsis[]
Our heroes are visiting Professor Oak, where Goh learns about Project Mew and decides he’s not interested. Professor Oak keeps most of Ash’s Pokémon at his lab, but Infernape is missing, and our heroes go out looking for it. Along the way, they run into Ash’s old friend and rival, Gary, who gives Goh quite a hard time. With Gary’s help, the boys eventually find Infernape bellowing a challenge to the Legendary Pokémon Moltres—who accepts! After the battle, Gary claims a fallen feather as part of his research for Project Mew, and Goh decides he wants to join up after all. Could this have been Gary’s plan all along?[1]
Episode plot[]
Ash and Goh are shown arriving at Professor Oak's Lab in Pallet Town to give him a parcel. Once they arrive, the boys greet Oak, as the two are familiar with him. Goh tells Ash about him knowing Oak from Pokémon Camp when he was younger while Ash says he woke up late to receive his Starter Pokémon, much to Goh's surprise as he could relate. Goh states that Pokémon Camp helped him on his journey as he spotted Mew during the time and had a goal to catch every Pokémon until he could find Mew. Professor Oak is surprised by this goal and asks to check Goh's Pokédex. Oak is amazed by the number of different species Goh has captured, particularly being surprised by Goh's capture of Suicune. Amazed by Goh's excellent Pokémon catching skills, he recommends that him and Ash join a recent team named "Project Mew" to help fulfill Goh's dream. Ash is excited by the offer, though Goh seems to contemplate whether he wants to join as capturing Mew could mean the end of his journey.
Outside of Oak's Lab, Ash goes out with Pikachu to greet his previous Pokémon, first reuniting with Bulbasaur and Charizard. Many of Ash's Pokémon also gather around him, welcoming him back. Goh is surprised by the amount of Pokémon Ash owns as well as their strong bond with him before Ash's herd of Tauros happily charges through, causing Ash and Pikachu to fly into the air before landing onto Muk which slowly envelopes Ash. As Ash gets back up, Professor Oak informs Ash that one of his many Pokémon is missing: his Infernape. Oak states that, before it disappeared, it began to fight the different Fire-type Pokémon Ash owned. Prepared to find Infernape, the boys head out into the forest around Pallet Town to investigate the mystery of the missing Pokémon.
The boys enter the forest, calling for Infernape. Suddenly, Goh becomes alarmed by a nearby Pokémon, exciting Ash, only to realize that it was simply a wild Pidgeotto that Goh had his sights on catching. Goh throws a Poké Ball at the Pidgeotto before it bursts from the Poké Ball and uses Whirlwind to send the boys tumbling away. They are blown into a wild Onix which Goh also attempts to catch, however, it bursts out of the Poké Ball just like Pidgeotto and prepares to use Rock Throw before a mysterious Trainer calls out. They order their Blastoise to use Hydro Pump, saving Ash and Goh from the Rock Snake Pokémon as it flees. Ash and Goh are surprised by the sudden appearance of Blastoise, though Ash quickly notices that his long-time friend and rival Gary Oak was responsible for saving them. The two friends are happy to have met up with each other with Ash questioning why Gary is in Kanto. Gary responds that he originally went to study Pokémon in the Sinnoh region but slowly became a Pokémon Researcher for Pokémon all around the world. Gary also spots Goh while Ash explains that he is a friend that he is studying Pokémon at the Cerise Laboratory with. Goh is at first hesitant to introduce himself, though Gary reassures that he means well and wants to see Goh become a strong Trainer due to him hearing news of him. Gary also tells of a report he received of Moltres approaching the area they are close to. Ash and Goh tell Gary that they are looking for Ash's missing Infernape while Gary suspects it may be in the same area and the group treks off to look for both Infernape and Moltres.
The three boys climb through the harsh sunlight and rocky mountains until they reach a cliff with a waterfall. Gary informs the boys that the cliff they are on was formed by flowing magma from a nearby volcano, a perfect place for Moltres to appear. Gary also investigates the area, concluding that Ash's Infernape may be nearby and that it escaped in order to test its strength against Moltres. The boys suddenly hear screeching nearby, coming from Ash's Infernape in a tree. Ash calls out to Infernape as it happily leaps from the tree, hugging Ash and causing him to fall to the ground. Ash asks Infernape if it was looking to battle Moltres, to which Infernape roars in affirmation. Just in time for Ash and Infernape's reunion, Moltres descends from the clouds, seemingly listening to Infernape's hopes to battle it. Infernape calls to Moltres as the two prepare to battle while Goh uses his Rotom Phone to record the Legendary Pokémon.
Ash challenges Moltres as it lets out a loud screech. Infernape uses Flamethrower as Moltres simply absorbs the flames into its wings. Moltres attacks with Fire Spin, creating a fiery vortex around Infernape. Infernape escapes the vortex with Dig and bursts out with Mach Punch, though Moltres dodges the attack. Moltres flies about while using Air Slash as Infernape uses Fire Spin to nullify the blades of air for a while before getting hit by one, sending it flying back into a boulder. Infernape continues to have fighting spirit despite being badly injured. Moltres attempts to swoop down on Infernape, though Gary quickly sends out his Blastoise as it uses Hydro Pump, sending back Moltres. Moltres uses Fire Spin around Blastoise, though Blastoise simply uses Rapid Spin to escape and attempts to use Skull Bash, missing Moltres. As Blastoise still flies through the air with Rapid Spin, it uses Water Pulse to hit Moltres, sending it back. After the hits received from Blastoise, Moltres begins to use Burn Up as its flames grow larger and begin to burn a redish-pink. Gary calls for Blastoise to watch out, though the attack hits Blastoise, causing it to take lots of damage. Gary notes that Moltres has lost its Fire typing due to the attack. Moltres continues to attack despite losing its primary type, using Hurricane to send back Blastoise after it uses Rapid Spin, making it faint as it tumbles down a hill.
Goh decides to send out his Cinderace for help, telling it to use Pyro Ball, which misses Moltres. Moltres hits back with Air Slash once again as Gary sends out Electivire and Ash sends forward Pikachu to use Thunder and Thunderbolt, respectively. The two Electric attacks stop Air Slash and hit Moltres with super-effective damage. The attack causes Moltres to tumble towards the ground, though it quickly continues to fly and zooms off, away from the three Trainers. As it flies off, it drops one of its feathers which Gary picks up, revealing it was his goal all along. Goh becomes saddened at the realization that his Rotom Phone didn't record the battle with the Legendary Pokémon. A Corviknight with a satchel around its neck descends from the sky as Gary puts a jar containing the Moltres feather into the bag.
Back at Oak's lab, the Pokémon are happy to see the return of Infernape. Professor Oak remarks on how he is surprised that it ran off simply to battle Moltres. Ash wants to thank Gary for his help in battling Moltres, though Gary is away from his father and the boys, talking to a girl named Asashi on his Rotom Phone about the arrival of the Moltres feather, earning a token from Project Mew. Professor Oak also reveals that Gary was a part of Project Mew all along, surprising Ash and Goh. Ash checks in with Gary, surprising him as he states his mission is to collect the genes of all Pokémon to help find Mew due to its status as an ancestor to all Pokémon. The two friendly rivals bid each other farewell as they promise to continue their own journeys. While Goh seems disgruntled by Project Mew, he decides that the project will help him get to his goal of capturing Mew and he decides to join the project, excitedly leaping into the air.
