Puss in Boots is a major character in the Shrek franchise, and the titular main protagonist of the spin-off franchise of the same name.
He is a notorious outlaw cat who lives a wild life of heroism and swashbuckling. He is also the best friend of Shrek, Donkey, and Perrito, and the boyfriend of Kitty Softpaws.
He is voiced by Antonio Banderas.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
Background[]
- As a child, he defended Humpty Alexander Dumpty from Little Boy Blue.
- He saved the Comandante's mother from being killed by a bull on the loose. This act cemented his early title as a hero and earned him his titular boots.
- While he caused trouble and engaged in theft when he was young, Imelda's influence would make him conflicted in continuing, and he later refused to after becoming a hero.
Puss in Boots[]
- Despite their soured relationship, he still helped Humpty retrieve the magic beans with Kitty Softpaws' help and use them to obtain the Golden Goose.
- He saves Kitty from drowning when they escape from the Bean Stalk.
- When he thought Humpty was kidnapped by Jack and Jill, he gave chase on them to rescue him.
- He forgives Kitty for her part in Humpty's betrayal.
- He convinces Humpty to redeem himself and ward the Great Terror away from San Ricardo with the Golden Goose.
- He saves the Golden Goose from falling to her death and tried to do the same for Humpty despite all that happened between them.
Shrek 2[]
- While he initially agrees to assassinate Shrek on King Harold's behalf, he abandons this hit after Shrek spares him during their duel and even offers to assist him and Donkey on their quest.
- Although it was partially done to spite Donkey, he grew a close bond with Shrek over the course of the journey and genuinely enjoyed the ogre's company. He was also the only one who laughed at his jokes.
- He retrieves the Happily Ever After potion from Fairy Godmother's factory for Shrek.
- Offered to drink the potion for Shrek to test if it was deadly before Donkey did so out of jealousy, all but outright saying he's happy with putting his own life on the line for him.
- He and the other fairy tale creatures helped Shrek and Donkey enter Far Far Away Castle to stop his wife Princess Fiona from being enchanted by Fairy Godmother into falling in love with her son Prince Charming.
- To repay his debt to Shrek, he stayed behind to fight off the castle guards so he and Donkey could reach Fiona.
- He puts his differences with Donkey aside and the two team up to steal the Fairy Godmother's wand so she couldn't harm Shrek.
Shrek the Third[]
- He helps Shrek try to act as regent in place of the ailing King Harold, if unsuccessfully; he notably tried to help Shrek knight someone.
- He joins Shrek and Donkey in traveling to Worcestershire Academy so they can bring the late Harold's nephew Arthur Pendragon to become the new king of Far Far Away.
- During the course of the adventure, he tries to calm Shrek down when he stresses over the idea of being a father after learning of Fiona's pregnancy.
- He helps Arthur and the other fairy tale creatures rescue Shrek from Prince Charming and the rest of the fairy tale villains.
Shrek Forever After[]
- During the first birthday party of Shrek's children, he finds another cake for them after the first one had been eaten.
- In the alternate reality, after having seen Shrek and Fiona bond during training, he realizes Shrek is indeed Fiona's true love and helps Shrek try to win her over.
- He helps Shrek and Fiona escape from Pied Piper.
- Along with Donkey and the other ogres, he infiltrates Rumpelstiltskin's palace and helps end his reign of tyranny.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish[]
- He returned all the money that the Governor of Del Mar taxed from the town's peasants back to their right owners.
- He defeated the Sleeping Giant of Del Mar.
- He, along with Kitty, showed horror and sympathy towards Perrito when he told his "funny" story, which was about his former owners tormenting him and attempting to drown him.
- He, after a near panic attack from Death's appearance, tells Perrito that he left Kitty during their wedding day and expressed regret over it.
- He apologizes to Kitty over abandoning her and even hands over the map so she could have someone she could trust.
- During their final duel on the Wishing Star, Puss tells Death that although he can't truly defeat him, he won't stop fighting for his last life, this respect and value of his mortality being what convinces the wolf to allow him to keep his life until it truly comes to an end.
- He, alongside Kitty, Goldilocks and the Ethical Bug, destroys the map to the Wishing Star in order to prevent Big Jack Horner from destroying the world via his wish.
- When he and the others escape from the collapsing Wishing Star as Jack frantically tries to fix the map pieces, he carries Perrito along with him. He also takes most of the fall when they leap to safety.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- Despite shedding most of his corrupting qualities, he still has some arrogant and overconfident moments, the former of which cost him eight of his lives (it's even elaborated that his fifth death was a foolish attempt to save face after Kitty both got the better of him and saved his life), and it was his arrogance that kickstarted The Last Wish by angering Death.
- He has a literal Kick the Dog moment where he remorselessly kicked Perrito into the magical forest to test whether or not it was deadly. While he becomes closer to Perrito later on, he never apologizes for this.
- He engages in small amounts of mischief, such as making fun of Donkey with Shrek behind his back, playing around with the Governor and his soldiers as he fights them, and stealing the Governor's boat at the end of The Last Wish.
- While the Governor was a jerk, Puss didn't steal the boat as some act of comeuppance, rather doing it only as a convenient way to reunite with Shrek and his friends.
Trivia[]
- There is a possibility that his status could be affected in the upcoming Shrek 5 film.
- While his Netflix counterpart is likely canon based on how he mentions Humpty Dumpty, this was likely chronologically before he appeared in the films by DreamWorks, and as such, he has grown out of the recklessness and incompetence displayed there.
