“ To remind you that deep beneath the layers of deviousness, there is a spark of decency. Perhaps you could blow on that spark occasionally. „
~ Holly Short to Artemis Fowl II

Holly Short is the deuteragonist of the Artemis Fowl book series, serving as the heroic secondary antagonist of Artemis Fowl and the deuteragonist of the rest of the series.

She is a member of the hidden, underground race of fairy-like creatures, and an official of their police system, LEPrecon, being the first female to become a captain in it. After a deviation from the rules forces her to perform a ritual to restore magic, she is kidnapped by the pre-teen genius human, Artemis Fowl, who wants to gain gold from the fairies to look for his father. Initially an archenemy of the boy, she and him become friends, and get really close, when they inevitably meet again multiple times, now as allies, to stop different dangers to the world of humans and fairies.

Her Good Ranking[]

What Makes Her Close to Being Pure Good?[]

  • While she may seem xenophobic towards humans, she never lets any of them die, has understandable reasons to do so, and gets over this prejudice (unlike most fairies) over the course of the books.
  • She saved multiple humans in a troll invaded restaurant after her superiors told her not to, as she could reveal their hidden world, showing how she is never willing to let anybody die.
  • She actually sympathized and with Artemis despite him kidnapping her, and was sad when she thought he had died, though not remorseful yet.
  • She brought Artemis and Butler to the fairy world to be interrogated about the usage of weapons by the B'wa Kell Gang, which Artemis is the main suspect.
  • After his innocence is proved, she uses his help to stop the goblins from going on a reckless and dangerous criminal rampage across the People's world.
  • She helped invade Koboi Industries, which allowed them to arrest Opal and defeat Briar, the orchestrators of the B'wa Kell revolution.
  • She helped Artemis get the C-Cube back from Jon Spiro, an ambitious human who'd use that technology to enhance his illegal activities and eventually take over the world.
  • Saved Butler's life when he was nearly dead, prevented only by half-Chryogenization.
  • Was overcome with grief when she thought she had killed her own commander, Root, because of Opal's machinations.
  • Went on to warn and try to protect a mindwiped Artemis from Opal's revenge plot.
  • Helped Artemis stay safe in the troll infested abandoned park Opal trapped them in.
  • Drove the Launcher the team was using to get ahead of Opal, and eventually defeat her and her plan with Artemis's ideas of putting her in her own ship.
  • Agreed to help Artemis secure a demon that went to the normal timeline and got kidnapped by Minerva Paradizo.
  • Invaded Minerva's house to save Number One undetected.
  • Wanted to help save Minerva and her father when their bodyguard, Billy Kong's, true intentions were revealed.
  • Fought against Abbot and his legion of demons alongside Artemis, Number One and Qwan.
  • Tried to help Artemis when he blamed her for infecting his mother, and continued to do so even when Artemis revealed the truth about his blackmailing.
  • Went back in time along with Artemis to stop this outbreak of a dangerous sickness known as Spelltropy.
  • Saved Artemis more than once in the past, from the Rathdown Park Gorilla and from himself.
  • Forgave Artemis when he allowed her to have closure that she never really got to have with Julius Root, her father figure, in the past.
  • Once she realized Artemis' plans, she played along with it, allowing them to escape the Extincitonists.
  • Tried to help fight against Opal and a mesmerized Butler.
  • Was really worried about Artemis because of his severe condition of Atlantis Complex.
  • Shoot Artemis with low power in order to send him off the probe's hit zone.
  • Saved herself, Artemis/Orion and Foaly when in the Arctic's lethal cold, and managed to warn Atlantis about what was about to happen there, saving hundreds of lives in the process.
  • Before being enslaved by rune by Turnball, she was helping fight against him.
  • Was really sympathetic over Nopal, a clone with limited sapience that Opal once used to escape prison, and now dwelled there, with no purpose, but still with life.
  • Even if Opal was her greatest enemy, she wasn't willing to watch her die, and tried to save her.
  • Got her, Butler and Artemis into the Fowl Manor to deal with Opal's plans.
  • Prevented Artemis and Butler from being possessed using residual magic from Number One.
  • Helped fend off a possessed Juliet Butler and her minion and make the plane fly.
  • Attempted to stop Artemis from proceeding with his plan to save the world, as it's kill him.
  • She tried to stop Artemis from being swallowed by the portal, fully aware that doing that would kill him too.
  • She told Artemis about his history after coming back to life and helped him remember.
  • She became Commodore Short and possibly became a partial leader of the LEP, leading and mentoring Lazuli Heitz in the process.
  • She realized the importance of Myles and Beckett to the LEP, and possibly in Myles' case, to the world and decided not to mind wiped them despite her decision being partially influenced by Myles threatening the expose the fairies to the world if he and Beckett were mindwiped.

What Prevents Her From Being Pure Good?[]

  • She is a jerk at times, messing and lightly insulting her friends, though not in bad times to do so as Foaly and Mulch do, and being mischievous over shooting Artemis, even if it was necessary to save his life.
  • She can be reckless at times, doing impulsive things, but it is a very minor prevention as those are more often than not the best decisions to do at the time, and end up saving much more people than if she followed her original orders.

Trivia[]

  • She and her movie counterpart are the only character in the franchise to be Near Pure Good in both mediums.
    • She and Opal Koboi are the only characters to have the same alignment in both mediums.
