—Fujin to Cetrion in Mortal Kombat 11 |
Fujin (Japanese: 風神) is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. The God of Wind and one of the former Protectors of Earthrealm, he is the younger brother of the Thunder God Raiden and one of the few playable Gods to appear in the series. He has been a supporting character throughout the series.
Fujin made his debut in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as an unnamed boss before making his playable debut in Mortal Kombat 4. Fujin would return as one of the many playable fighters in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
Fujin returned in Mortal Kombat 11 as DLC as part of the Aftermath Story Mode expansion, marking his return to the franchise as a playable character for the first time in almost 14 years. He also serves as one of the protagonists of the Aftermath Story Mode expansion.
About Fujin
First appearing as an unnamed boss in the adventure title Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, the Wind God Fujin made his debut as a playable character Mortal Kombat 4. Along with Raiden, Fujin is another character in the series to have originated from Japanese religion, based on the Shinto god of the wind of the same name. He appears as a tall, ageless, muscular human with long white hair bound in a ponytail and glowing white eyes. The back of his Mortal Kombat 4 costume features the Chinese character 空, whose most relevant translation to English is air or sky. As expected, he has a great variety of wind-oriented attacks at his disposal.
In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin is revealed to be Raiden's younger brother.[1] At some point in time, Fujin left the Sky Temple to live among the humans, much to Raiden's chagrin. The Thunder God feared sentiment would impede Fujin's duties if he became too close to mortals. This resulted in a fight between the two gods. This, according to Fujin, was the only time they ever came to quarrel with one another.
Fujin's time among the humans changed his outlook, realizing that contrary to Raiden's fear of sentiment weakening Fujin, it actually strengthened him. Instead of fighting to kill the enemy, he now fights to protect the ones he loves most, hence why he understands Jax's pain as a result of his "failures" and how deep those wounds can be manipulated. As a result, he is more relatable on a human level than Raiden is. He serves as a beacon of hope to the people of Earthrealm, helping to inspire and uplift their spirits with his relatively optimistic view of life.
Appearance
Taking on the form of a mortal man, Fujin appears as a light-skinned man with slicked back white hair tied into a ponytail and eyes similar to Raiden. Fujin has long gray hair in a pony tail, and glowing white eyes. He wears a black vest with brown designs, along with loose green pants and metal shin and forearm guards. In his debut, Fujin wore a red cape, but was discarded afterward. Interesting to note in Mythologies that his in-game sprite depicts him with blue pants and a black headband, neither of which are used in later 3D renditions.
Following his return in Armageddon, he wears a more detailed version of his original clothing with shoulder guards added. His hair is no longer slicked back with bangs framing his face and his hair longer, extended into a long braid with three hairpieces.
Fujin reappears in Mortal Kombat X's Story Mode. His vest and belt are now of tooled black leather edged in red and accented with metal rings, as well as matching armlets. He retains shoulder guards and lacks a cape. His braid is held back with a narrow leather headband, looped through rings.
In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin's default outfit features a heavily updated version of his MK4 outfit with embellishments from his Armageddon design. He also bears a glowing tattoo of his namesake on his shoulder. Another of his outfits gives him white flowing robes with more intricate glowing markings covering his arms. His third outfit is loosely based on his Mythologies depiction though with a shorter, tattered cape and short, slicked back hair.
Game Information
Fujin was written to be Raiden's brother (which is also true for the myths) in Mortal Kombat 4's official strategy guide,[2] although this has not been mentioned in games until Raiden's character trailer for MK11. The character possessed a projectile crossbow weapon in this title, which Ed Boon has stated that he believed was a mistake as it did not fit with the style of the rest of the weapons and the computer AI had a difficult time managing it.[3] Concept art in Armageddon,[4] early video footage of the game,[3] and a screen shot seen in the instruction manual[5] show that Fujin was to have a weapon known as the Wind Staff, described as being an ancient tree branch fitted with "Forest Crystals" and having magical wind energy circling the twigs on the staff's end.[4] However, he would instead be given what was initially Reiko's Devastator sword in the final version.
Fujin makes two small cameo appearances in Mortal Kombat: Deception. In the game's Konquest mode, he can be found in Orderrealm searching for a book that will help him in his defense of Earthrealm.[6] He is also seen as a background prisoner in the Dark Prison stage, along with various other characters.
In Mortal Kombat (2011), Fujin makes a brief appearance in Kratos' ending alongside Raiden. There was a video of a hacker using a basic character model, but once this model is chosen at the character select screen, the announcer says "Fujin", leading many to believe that he would be DLC. Soon enough, though, he was denied by Ed Boon, through Twitter.
Fujin returns in Mortal Kombat X's Story mode, aiding Raiden in defending Earthrealm from Shinnok and the invading Netherrealm forces.
In Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin returned as a DLC character for the game and one of the protagonists for the DLC story mode, Aftermath. The bio of Fujin on the game's website has finally confirmed that Fujin is indeed Raiden's brother.
Combat Characteristics
Powers and Abilities
As a god, Fujin is one of the most powerful characters in the franchise. He is in complete control of all things related to wind and can use it for a variety of techniques such as levitating by manipulating the wind around him, allowing him to strike the opponent from a safe distance. He can also send miniature tornadoes at his opponents that spin them around several times and leave them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. Additionally, he can levitate the opponent and slam them down on the ground and surround himself into a tornado to heave them towards him. Considering that many of these moves can potentially leave the foe open for a free hit, Fujin has proven to be a supremely powerful fighter on par with that of fellow god Raiden. Fujin is also an immortal God much like Raiden, he can't die as was proven in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero where he literally created a tornado so large it ripped his body apart and then returned shortly (off-screen) after that as seen in MK4.
In Mortal Kombat 11, he is now armed with a Kusanagi no Tsurugi sword and uses it in tandem with its scabbard while using his wind powers to send it flying and slashing at his enemies from a distance, with his plasma crossbow also making a return. His wind powers have also been expanded upon, trapping opponents in vacuums, shooting invisible air bullets from his fists and even sucking the oxygen out of his opponent and weaponizing it. He is also able to walk on literal thin air, giving him a massive aerial advantage over his opponent which cements his status as the true God of Wind.
Signature Moves
- Rising Knee: Fujin would fly and hit his opponent three times with his knees. (MK4, MKG)
- Gusting Cyclone: Fujin spins like a tornado which sucks the opponent in and throws them to the other side. (MK4, MKG, MK:A)
- Air Funnel: Fujin uses a gust of wind to lift his opponent and slam them down. (MK4, MKG, MK:A)
- Wind Kick: While airborne, Fujin comes down and kicks the opponent. In MK4 and MKG, Fujin can make two kicks. In MK11, this attack is called Wind Kicks and has Fujin propel himself into the air to deliver a series of spin kicks to the opponent with the final kick knocking them away. When propelling himself, Fujin can travel full-screen distance. Equipping the Airsenal Equip Ability allows Fujin to perform the attack in the air, called (Air) Wind Kicks, respectively. This attack has armor breaking properties, ignoring the armor granted by specific abilities and Fatal Blows. When breaking the armor of a Break Away, the attack will deal very little extra damage. This attack is capable of striking opponents in the air, whether this being from a combo or the opponent jumping at the Fujin. (MK4, MKG, MK:A, MK11)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin call upon his Tsurugi to slash the opponent before recalling it back to him, dealing increased damage.
- Tornado Wind: Fujin launches a small tornado at the opponent, causing them to spin around wildly and setting them up for an additional combo. (MK:A)
- Krossbow Blast: Fujin draws his Plasma Crossbow and fires a shot directly at the opponent. This can miss ducking opponents. Fujin can change the direction of where he wants the shot to travel, called Up/Down Krossbow Blast, respectively. Changing the direction of the crossbow shot has it ricochet off either the ground or ceiling before hitting the opponent. Doing this requires a bar of Offensive Meter and allows the attack to hit ducking opponents. (MK11)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin fire a second crossbow shot at the opponent for increased damage. This second shot does not have an increased hitbox and can miss ducking opponents. Fujin can also change the direction of the second bolt just like with Up/Down Krossbow Blast, however this does not require another bar of Offensive Meter to do this. However, when amplifying Up/Down Krossbow Blast, a second bar of Offensive Meter is required to ricochet the second shot.
- Tornado: Fujin hovers in the air, surrounding himself in a small funnel cloud. Should the opponent be struck by the winds, they will take damage and be knocked away. Fujin can remain in place when performing this attack but also has the option to retreat or advance, called Retreating/Advancing Tornado, respectively. Equipping the Airsenal Equip Ability allows Fujin to perform the attack in the air, called (Air) Tornado, respectively. As with the original, Fujin can retreat or advance while in the air, called (Air) Retreating/Advancing Tornado, respectively. (MK11)
- Equipping Twister allows Fuji’s to amplify the attack, launching the opponent into the air for a juggle while dealing increased damage.
- (Air) Wind Barrier: Fujin can parry airborne attacks and projectiles by creating a blast of wind from his palms in front or below himself. When parrying the attacks, Fujin is given the option to counterattack if he chooses to and can use different attacks; (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Flying Sword: After parrying an attack, Fujin jets forward and slashes the opponent with his sword.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin spin his sword twice before delivering a final airborne stab, dealing increased damage.
- Dive Kick: After parrying an attack, Fujin rushes downward in a diagonal direction and kicks the opponent, similar to Kung Lao's Dive Kick.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin deliver two rising knee strikes in quick session, dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent away.
- If Fujin parries two attacks in a row, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow when amplified the second time, with the second knee strike shattering the opponent's ribcage, dealing increased damage and launching the opponent high into the air for a juggle.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin deliver two rising knee strikes in quick session, dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent away.
- Flying Sword: After parrying an attack, Fujin jets forward and slashes the opponent with his sword.
- Sky Wakka: Fujin uses the wind to quickly launch himself into the air, where he begins running in the air above and across the fightline. While in the air, Fujin can perform various attacks. The attack can be canceled any time while Fujin walks. Canceling the attack requires and spends a bar of Defensive Meter. If this ability is equipped alongside (Air) Wind Barrier, Fujin can also use the attack while utilizing Sky Wakka, however he can not use the airborne version of Wind Kicks or Tornado. This ability conflicts with Divine Wind dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent away. when equipped, disabling the option to select Divine Wind. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin create a small funnel cloud around him, damaging the opponent if they are near Fujin. Fujin can still perform additional attacks when amplifying Sky Wakka.
- Flying Sword: Fujin jets forward and slashes the opponent with his sword. This version of the attack deals slightly less damage than the Flying Sword performed after using (Air) Wind Barrier.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin spin his sword twice before delivering a final airborne stab, dealing increased damage.
- Dive Kick: Fujin rushes downward in a diagonal direction and kicks the opponent, similar to Kung Lao's Dive Kick. This version of the attack deals slightly less damage than the Dive Kick performed after using (Air) Wind Barrier.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin deliver two rising knee strikes in quick session, dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent away.
- If Fujin walks two steps while in the air, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow when amplified, with the second knee strike shattering the opponent's ribcage, dealing increased damage and launching the opponent high into the air for a juggle.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin deliver two rising knee strikes in quick session, dealing increased damage and knocking the opponent away.
- Flying Sword: Fujin jets forward and slashes the opponent with his sword. This version of the attack deals slightly less damage than the Flying Sword performed after using (Air) Wind Barrier.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin create a small funnel cloud around him, damaging the opponent if they are near Fujin. Fujin can still perform additional attacks when amplifying Sky Wakka.
- Divine Wind: Fujin uses the wind to form a small tornado underneath him, allowing him to hover in the air for some time. While in the air, Fujin can utilize Hop Attacks. Additionally, his Hop attacks are modified while utilizing this attack. Fujin can cancel hovering at any time. This ability conflicts with Sky Wakka when equipped, disabling the option to select Sky Wakka. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- If Fujin hovers for a short time, successfully performing either of his Punch Hop Attacks turns them into a Krushing Blow, where the slash from his sword shatters the top of the opponent's head, dealing increased damage and bouncing them off the ground for a juggle. This Krushing Blow can only trigger from utilizing Divine Wind and can only trigger once per Hop Attack.
- Wind Push: Fujin blasts the opponent with a gust of wind, causing them to stumble. This attack deals no damage. The attack can also be used at different ranges, called Close/Far Wind Push, respectively. This attack is not considered a projectile. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin blast the opponent with a second blast of wind, this time dealing damage and knocking the opponent away full-screen distance. The attack cannot be amplified if the original hit is Flawless Blocked by the opponent.
- If Fujin performs and connects each version of the attack in order from original to Close to Far, any version of the attack will turn into a Krushing Blow when amplified, causing the second blast of wind to shatter the opponent's ribcage and deal nearly four times the original damage. The knockback effect remains the same. This Krushing Blow will not trigger if Fujin uses any other attack besides Wind Push. Additionally, this Krushing Blow will not trigger if any version of Wind Push misses when performing them in order.
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin blast the opponent with a second blast of wind, this time dealing damage and knocking the opponent away full-screen distance. The attack cannot be amplified if the original hit is Flawless Blocked by the opponent.
- Air Slam: Fujin creates a pocket of air above the fightline that sucks the opponent in before forcing the opponent to the ground with winds. This attack can be used at different ranges, called Close/Far/Very Far Air Slam, respectively. This attack can only strike airborne opponents. This ability replaces Tornado when equipped and conflicts with Twister and Airsenal when equipped, disabling the option to select Twister or Airsenal. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin form a tornado underneath the opponent after slamming them, spinning them in the air until they are thrown upward off screen, where they come crashing down to the ground, dealing over double the original damage. The opponent is vulnerable when returning to the fightline, however this window is small.
- Jet Stream: Fujin enters a brief stance, condensing the wind around him, causing wind to circulate around his arms. During this time, some of Fujin's basic attacks and combos have increased range and produce an additional strike with wind. Additionally, Bending Wind and Crosswind deal increased damage. Connecting or being struck by a Krushing Blow or Fatal Blow ends this effect prematurely. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Pressure Bomb: Fujin creates a traveling ball of air that travels a short distance across the fightline before detonating. If the opponent is struck by the explosion of the ball, they will be briefly launched in the air for a juggle. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack increases the damage and juggle effect of the attack. Fujin can also increase the distance the ball travels, travelling a slightly further distance than both versions of the attack.
- Turbulence: Fujin creates a giant pocket of air above the fightline that remains for some time that alters the opponent's movement should they jump into it. The attack can be used at different ranges, called Close/Far Turbulence, respectively. Connecting or being struck by a Krushing Blow or Fatal Blow ends this effect prematurely. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack has the vortex follow Fujin for the duration of the attack.
- Warped Needle: Fujin summons his sword using air and uses the air to spin it rapidly in his palm, striking the opponent multiple times. This ability replaces Wind Kicks when equipped. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- Amplifying the attack has Fujin perform an overhead slash then knock the opponent away with a gust of wind, dealing increased damage. When blocked by the opponent, the attack creates considerable pushback. This version of the attack is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin vulnerable to Flawless Block Attacks. Additionally, when Flawless Blocked, the pushback effect is ignored and Fujin does not perform the gust of wind.
Fatal Blow
- Fatal Blow - Winds of Change: Fujin hits the opponent with a gust of wind and tosses his sword at them. The sword hits their shoulder and hovers in the air while Fujin riddles the opponent with crossbow bolts, sending the last one in the head. The sword flies towards Fujin and pierces the opponent with the back while Fujin leaps upwards, drives the weapon into the opponent's head and knocks them away with a wind blast. (MK11)
Other Moves
- Throw (Forward): Fujin knees the opponent in the gut, and once they gasp in pain, he pulls the air out of their lungs, condenses it and strikes them away with it. (MK11)
- If Fujin performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the wind gust breaking the opponent's ribcage, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Backward). If the opponent successfully performs a Throw Escape before the Krushing Blow is performed, the next Throw performed will not trigger a Krushing Blow.
- Throw (Backward): Fujin creates a tornado that keeps the opponent spinning in the air, pulls out his crossbow and shoots them in the head. (MK11)
- If Fujin performs this on an opponent who has failed a Throw Escape during a previous Throw before, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the crossbow bolt going through the opponent's head and causing blood to splatter, dealing over double the original damage. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of his Throw (Forward). If the opponent successfully performs a Throw Escape before the Krushing Blow is performed, the next Throw performed will not trigger a Krushing Blow.
- Gusting Cyclone: Fujin delivers two punches to the opponent's mid-section before knocking them away with kick to the face. (MK11)
- If this combo is performed on an opponent as a Kounter or Punish, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the final kick to the face crushing the upper half of the opponent's skull inward and sending the opponent to the complete other side of the screen, similar to Rain's Superkick, dealing almost three times the original damage.
- Whisked Away: Fujin slides towards the opponent and delivers a powerful punch to their chest, knocking them slightly away. Fujin is capable of dodging attacks and projectiles when sliding. Fujin cannot perform the final punch of this combo if the initial hit is Flawless Blocked by the opponent. Fujin is capable of delaying when he performs the final punch, which in turn can leave Fujin vulnerable in some instances, and can allow the final punch to be Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin vulnerable to Flawless Block Attacks. (MK11)
- If only the punch successfully lands, whether the opponent successfully blocks the first strike and not the second or the second strike lands on its own, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the punch to the chest shattering the opponent's ribcage and dealing over three times the damage of the final strike but over double the combo's entire damage. This Krushing Blow can not trigger if Jet Stream is active.
- Krushing Zephyr: Fujin kicks forward and performs a front flip, bringing his foot down on the opponent's head. The final overhead flip kick is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin vulnerable to Flawless Block Attacks. (MK11)
- If only the flip kick successfully lands twice in a row, whether the opponent successfully blocks the first strike and not the second or the second strike lands on its own twice, the combo turns into a Krushing Blow, with the flip kick shattering the top of the opponent's head, dealing double the original damage of the flip kick and dealing increased damage compared to the combo's original damage. Fujin is offered the use of special attacks after performing this Krushing Blow.
- Blown Away: Fujin kicks the opponent into the air, punches them in the stomach, then performs a spin kick engulfed in wind while blasting a gust of wind at the opponent. The gust of wind at the end of the combo is considered a projectile. Fujin is very safe when this combo is blocked by the opponent, and the combo creates considerable pushback. The final kick of this combo is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin completely vulnerable. Additionally, when Flawless Blocked by the opponent, the pushback effect is ignored and Fujin does not perform the gust of wind. (MK11)
- Bending Wind: Fujin pulls the opponent in closer using wind. Fujin can also pull the opponent in at close range, called Close Bending Wind, respectively. This basic attack is considered a projectile. Fujin can perform a follow-up attack after connecting this attack; (MK11)
- Whirlwind: After pulling the opponent in, Fujin surrounds himself in a circular funnel of wind, spinning the opponent around in the wind before kicking them away. This combo-ender is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin completely vulnerable.
- Equipping Deadly Winds allows Fujin to amplify the combo, where he stabs the opponent directly in the chest with his sword before kicking them away, dealing increased damage. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
- If this combo is performed on an opponent as a Punish against the opponent's Back Dash, the attack turns into a Krushing Blow, with the sword impaling the opponent and causing blood to splatter, dealing increased damage and causing massive damage-over-time. If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of amplified Tailwind.
- Tailwind: Fujin sucks the opponent in by closing in the surrounding air around them before surrounding himself in a circular funnel of wind, spinning the opponent around in the wind before kicking them away. This combo is capable of being Flawless Blocked by the opponent, leaving Fujin completely vulnerable. (MK11)
If this is successful, Fujin can not perform the Krushing Blow version of amplified Whirlwind.
- Equipping Deadly Winds allows Fujin to amplify the combo, where he stabs the opponent directly in the chest with his sword before kicking them away, dealing increased damage. (MK11 - Equip Ability)
Fatalities
- Crossbow Kill: After levitating the opponent, Fujin shoots his crossbow at them, causing them to explode. (MK4, MKG)
- Skinner: Fujin concentrates a huge blast of wind at the opponent that rips their skin clean off.(MK4, MKG)
- Wind Blade: Fujin draws his blade and releases shearing gusts of wind that cuts off the opponent's arm and leg. Then he flies into the air and fires two waves of high-powered wind at his opponent, slicing off through their torso with a portion of their midsection barely holding them together. He then tosses his sword towards them, then the opponent screams NO! and try to stop it with their hand but failed to do so because the sword went through their hand and the mouth while their body breaks into three parts. (MK11)
- Twisted Twister: Fujin slices his opponent's gut open, causing an entrail to spill out. He then steps on it as he lifts them in the air with wind and spins them around, letting their intestine wrap around them. Fujin proceeds to then generate a violent twisting torrent around them, slamming against the ground with enough force that it obliterates their torso, leaving their head and limbs scattered in a bloody heap. (MK11)

- Has the same requirements as Breathless.
- Certain buttons must be held.
Other Finishers
- Friendship - Let's Go Fly a Kite: Fujin produces a Raiden kite and uses his wind powers to fly it, but will occasionally get dragged around by the kite. (MK11)

Trivia
General
- His name, Fujin, derived from the Japanese Fūjin (風神), meaning "Wind God", who is one of the eldest Shinto Gods.
- With his inclusion as a DLC character and gaining a role in the Story Mode of Mortal Kombat 11, Fujin is the first DLC character to be added to a game's Story Mode and Arcade rather than just being added to the Arcade exclusively.
- Additionally, he is the fourth of four DLC characters in Mortal Kombat 11 to gain a role in the game's Story Mode, the others being the original Kombat Pack fighters Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Sindel.
- Skarlet could also fall into these categories, however her original appearance in Mortal Kombat (2011)'s Story Mode were cameo appearances before she made her playable debut later as DLC.
- Additionally, he is the fourth of four DLC characters in Mortal Kombat 11 to gain a role in the game's Story Mode, the others being the original Kombat Pack fighters Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Sindel.
- Unlike Raiden who was a former Elder God in the original timeline, Fujin has never been depicted as an Elder God in any capacity.
- Fujin's Twisted Brutality in MK11 was inspired by Japanese anime and was discussed to be as detailed as possible to match Fujin sheathing his sword as the opponent's body falls apart.
- The name of his sword in MK11, the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, shares its name with one the Imperial Japanese Regalia.
Mortal Kombat 4/Gold
- According to the instruction booklet of Japanese version, Fujin likes sponge cake.
- Prior to its confirmation in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, the instruction booklet of Japanese version mentioned that Fujin is Raiden's younger brother.
- If Fujin's crossbow has been dropped or thrown, performing his Crossbow Kill Fatality will cause Fujin to produce a second crossbow.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
- In early versions of Armageddon, Mian Chuan and Hapkido were supposed to be his unarmed fighting style. He was also going to have the Wind Staff, before he eventually acquired the Devastator.
- Fujin uses the Lui He fighting style that Shao Kahn had in Deception.
- Fujin is the only character whose relic belongs exclusively to his alternate costume.
- In his Bio Kard, it states that his first appearance was in MK4 but his first actual appearance was in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, despite not being named in the latter.
Mortal Kombat X
- Fujin cameos in the beginning the Story Mode battling the Oni at the Sky Temple with Raiden. He is not seen at all afterwards.
- Fujin also appears on selectable Player Card backgrounds.
- Fujin voiced by Troy Baker, who also voices Erron Black and Shinnok.
- If the player performs Cassie Cage's Selfie Fatality in Mortal Kombat X, it is possible for a message to appear from user "noobde" (Ed Boon's Twitter account) stating, "Has anyone unlocked Fujin?".
- There was going to be a scene in the game's Story Mode where Fujin joined Jax and the Special Forces in the Netherrealm to await D'Vorah but the scene was cut due to time.[7]
Mortal Kombat 11
- In a 2024 interview with the Kamidogu podcast, Matt Yang King revealed that he drew inspiration for Fujin's voice from the character of Rain from Big Trouble in Little China. [8]
- "I always noticed whenever he was talking, he had a cooler sound when he was out of breath...and so, everything became very airy. And he had this, like, long tone that was after...and I was like 'oh, so we can take that kind of, like, airy tone, and make him a little higher than Liu Kang, and sort of put him in this range. And give him some edge."
- Like Fujin, the character of Rain is also a long-haired master of the straightsword (a jian as opposed to Fujin's tsurugi) with air-related elemental powers and a fighting style reminiscent of wuxia cinema.
- Being mentioned in interactions between Cetrion, Frost, & Raiden, Fujin is attacked by the former two. Promising not to go down easily, Fujin is nonetheless frozen by Frost, presumably killing him.
- Through his interactions with Frost and Geras, it is confirmed that Kronika sent the pair to kill Fujin, but he managed to escape. The Titaness herself then made her offer to the Wind God, and, after his refusal, trapped him in the same Time Void Shang Tsung and Nightwolf were, as the start of Aftermath confirms.
- Fujin returns to the franchise as a playable character after a nearly 14 year absence, this time returning as a playable character and having a role in the Aftermath Story Mode DLC.
- Fujin's appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 is frequently compared to Vergil from the Devil May Cry series. Both are siblings of a main protagonist, wielding a sword with a style akin to iaijutsu and having slicked back hair as well as a disposition opposite to their brother. Though in this case, Fujin's character is closer to Dante's than Vergil's.
- This comparison was noted upon by Stephanie Brownback during the character's Kombat Kast showcase, calling him "looking very motivated", one of Vergil's more famous catchphrases.
- The last image of Fujin's ending is a reference to the famous The Last Supper, which pictured Jesus Christ dining together with his apostles before his cruxification.
- Additionally, Shang Tsung is positioned where Judas Iscariot is usually depicted in various images.
- Interactions with Johnny Cage reveal Fujin originally blessed the tribe that began the actor's bloodline, in addition to revealing Cage's distant ancestor was as equally "insufferable". Fujin also admits to being a fan of Cage's films despite his admitted impatience with Cage himself.
- Fujin and Scorpion are the only characters to have a Fatality that requires a Far Distance.
- Interactions with Jax, Jacqui and Scorpion reference the deleted scene from MKX where Fujin helped Jax fight Shinnok's forces whilst awaiting D'Vorah.
- The name of Fujin's default variation is a possible reference to the critically acclaimed Nickleodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
- The name of his of one of his special attacks, Sky Wakka, is a pun towards the Star Wars characters Anakin and Luke whose last name is Skywalker.
Errors
- In MK11, Fujin's sword and its sheath are not connected to Fujin at all, floating in the air as it sits next to him. This is easiest to see when selecting him before a fight.
- In MK11, Fujin's sword and crossbow incorrectly swap sides when he switches stances.
- In MK11, when equipping (Air) Wind Barrier, the ability appears a second time in the Special Move list underneath its additional attacks.
