Mahi Marohi|Suggested To Do List

[takatā pūtake]

This page is currently a stub. Here is a suggested priority list of sections to transfer and translate from the equivalent English page (en:Continent):

Main sections:

  • Animated, Color-Coded Map
  • Number of Continents
  • Area and Population
  • Highest and Lowest Points

Navigation boxes:

  • The Earth
  • Continents of the World (just the first two rows with maps, not the lists of geological, submerged, historical, etc. continents)
  • Regions of the World

I've added the animated color-coded map. The one in en:Continent labels a continent "Australia"; I've picked a different version which labels it "Oceania". However, I don't know how to edit the names of the continents in an animated GIF. We can request someone do it later and upload it to File:Continental models mi.gif. We'll need to agree on continent names first: should North America be Nōta Amerika as our article currently has it, or Amerika te tai Tokerau to match our article Amerika ki te Tonga? Eurasia and Antarctica will need a translation, as will Five/Six/Seven Continents Model (or we could have that text moved to the bottom left corner and simplified as in the one used in the English article).-gadfium (talk) 03:43, 14 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've copied the Number of continents section, without doing any translation of the contents.-gadfium (talk) 04:10, 14 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Amerika Te Tai Tokerau isn't quite grammatical, and also feels like "Northland America" so I would go with Ki te Raki. Geographical names should generally not be made up tho, but rather follow Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo usage (ie Maori Language Comission publications and its dictionaries) which is probably why we have Nōta Amerika and Amerika Ki Te Tonga - I wouldn't change it just for consistency reasons. I've finished all your suggestions. I'll start translating the tables if I get a chance tomorrow.-gadfium (talk) 04:13, 15 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help Gadfium and Piwaiwaka, I think the page looks good. I've now translated everything except the references (I think it's great to have included the references, but I also find them blindingly boring to try and translate so I might leave that to someone else if that's kosher). I agree that North America should be Amerika ki te Raki and not Nōta Amerika. I'm not sure why the (as yet uncreated page) links under 'Tukanga tatau' and 'Rahinga whenua, taupori' don't work. On a more general level, I wonder whether we need to include imperial measures (ft, miles, etc.) in this Māori wiki? A cursory glance at the 'Continent' pages over on the French, Spanish and Chinese wikis suggest they're only using the metric system, so I assume the English wiki is only offering both systems for it's U.S. audience. I don't feel strongly either way, but it seemed worth raising at least. It'd be awesome if the GIF could be translated, but also no biggy. I'd like to cross off each continent next, so I've added a suggested to do list to Talk:Āhia. Hope to see you there. Hāpara (talk) 22:24, 18 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fine to ignore the references, for now.
I've created a redirect from Amerika ki te Raki to Nōta Amerika, but if everyone is happy I can move the latter to Amerika ki te Raki instead.
I'm comfortable with dropping the imperial measurements, although it would be more work to remove them when copying tables from English Wikipedia than to translate the column headings. Removing them from text as a translation is done is fine.
Before I ask for the GIF to be translated, do we want to use the one currently in the article File:Continental_models.gif or the one in the English Wikipedia article File:Continental_models-Australia.gif? The English one has "6 Continents" in the bottom corner which I think is clearer than "6 SIX CONTINENTS MODEL" below Africa. Which ever we choose, do we want the label of the rightmost continent to be "Ahitereiria" (Australia) or "Ao-o-Kiwa" (Oceania)? If we choose Ao-o-Kiwa I'll alter the tables to reflect the different population and area.-gadfium (talk) 01:03, 19 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
- Seems logical to me to just rename the Nōta Amerika page. While we're talking about it, I've been trying to work out what Te Taura Whiri (The Māori Language Commission) wants us to do about hyphens in multipart place names like this (see: Orthographic Conventions), and although it's super complicated to follow I'm pretty sure Rule 3.7 takes precedence, meaning we'd write all compound names of six or less syllables as one word (Tamanuiterā), and those of seven or more syllables as separated words joined using hyphens (Amerika-ki-te-raki). So, should we rename Nōta Amerika as Amerika-ki-te-raki?
- No worries to not remove imperial measures from tables if it's complicated, I'll just stop translating them in the body of text from now on.
- I agree the GIF in the English article with the big numbers in the bottom lefthand corner is clearer, and I also agree Ao-o-Kiwa is a better name for the continent including Australia and the South Pacific Islands than Ahitereiria.
- Finally, while we're on a roll I've added suggested to do lists to the other six continent pages; Āwherika, Amerika-ki-te-raki, Amerika-ki-te-tonga, Tiri-o-te-Moana, Ūropi, Ao-o-Kiwa. As always no hurry just thought I'd think things out a little more systematically. Hāpara (talk) 21:27, 20 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've requested a modified animated continent illustration at en:User talk:Carnildo#Image modification request. If I've made any mistakes in the request, please note them there so we don't waste his time.-gadfium (talk) 02:07, 21 Noema 2015 (UTC)[reply]
