The funnel[1] is a room in Artaria. It appears in Metroid Dread. In this room, Samus Aran encounters the first E.M.M.I., E.M.M.I.-01P.

Description[]

This is a small corridor that has a large funnel in the ceiling, hence the room's name. At the top of the funnel is a large circular hole in the ceiling, through which light shines. The source of this light is unknown, since there is no direct origin point above it on the Map. A ventilation fan is placed inside the light, with its reflection visible on the funnel's surface. It makes loud noise as it slowly turns. On the back of the wall are five vent ports that release an unknown vapor. Additionally, there are two cables hanging from the ceiling. Scuff marks are present on the funnel under the ports and right before the drop; what caused these is unknown.

On the lower floor are two large pipes with exhaust valves. The second pipe's leftmost and rightmost valves exhaust steam at regular intervals, while only the left valves on the first pipe does. A railing is located on the floor between them.

When Samus enters this room from the top, she Slides down the funnel into the lower corridor. Noticing that the door out is locked, she quickly turns and discovers a tall robot - the E.M.M.I. - stalking towards her. She takes aim, but it walks right up to Samus and slams her onto the floor. A tutorial ensues, explaining that Samus has a small window of opportunity to counter an E.M.M.I. if it catches her. The tutorial freezes right before it strikes, allowing Samus to counter and slide under its legs. The tutorial repeats if it catches Samus again, until she leaves the room. As Samus flees, she finds a room with a destroyed Central Unit and absorbs energy from it, enhancing her Arm Cannon to be capable of destroying the E.M.M.I.

When the temperature of ZDR falls, it is possible to visit this room. However, the door to the Central Unit access corridor is frozen over, with icicles hanging from the ceiling near it. The fan and ventilation systems have also stopped. Normal operations resume after the source of the freezeover is dealt with.

Later visits[]

After the X are released from Elun, the Klaida turns into a second Dropter when killed, if its X is not absorbed quickly enough. A Takumaku is present here during the cooldown of ZDR and does the same thing.

Items[]

Funnel Missile Tank location
Missile Tank
Requires Space Jump. From the top of the funnel, Samus must Space Jump to the right to reach a small tunnel in the wall. Laying a Bomb will unveil a Missile Tank. Alternatively, Samus can Shinespark up the funnel from below and Flash Shift to the ledge, or perform a difficult series of Bomb Jumps.[2]

Tutorials[]

"An E.M.M.I.'s attack can be countered by pressing [X] at the exact moment of the flash. However, the timing is extremely difficult to gauge, making this a desperate maneuver[note 1]."

"Tilt[note 2] [L stick], and press [ZL] to slide under an E.M.M.I. while it's stunned."

Trivia[]

  • The sound of the fan spinning continues to play even if the Map is active.

Notes[]

  1. ^ In E3 2021 footage, the last sentence ended by describing counters as "a last resort at best". This was changed to "a desperate maneuver" for the final release.
  2. ^ In E3 2021 footage, the tutorial said to Hold the L stick and had no comma.
