Wikipedia for Peace/No More War 2020
Wikipedia for Peace Online: No More War!
12-19 June 2020
About the project
This is an online camp! A pandemic is spreading across the globe. Volunteers and activists are looking for new online spaces to use for peace and social justice. Wikipedia can be one of them! In this Wikipedia for Peace online camp, we will learn how to write Wikipedia articles and will get to know more about inspiring activists and organisations fighting for peace and non-violence - and against war and militarism. Some of the core topics of the project that we want to cover are antimilitarism, nuclear weapons, non-violence, disarmament, weapon industries and military conscription.
A week of editing Wikipedia together and connecting! Every day we have ca. 3 hours in the afternoon (Central European Time) where we gather in the video platform Zoom. And in the mornings you can work individually or in small groups. You don’t have to have knowledge on Wikipedia already to join the project. We will be a group of 15 participants from around the world. We will meet online via video calls from 12-19 June 2020. Our common language will be English. Apart from editing Wikipedia and learning / discussing about antimilitarism, we will also get to know each other.
This project is organised by Service Civil International Switzerland in cooperation with Wikimedia Switzerland.
Join the project
The camp is full unfortunately. Hope to have you at the next Wikipedia for Peace project!
Agenda

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Morning | Individual task: Introduce yourself: Send 3 photos that represent your life to our communication channel in order to introduce yourself. Also, pick an article from the article list that you want to write/edit. | Individual editing: Spend some time doing research for an article of your choice and writing it. Thomas is online in Zoom to help you in the process. | Free day / Self-organized activities: This is the day for you to ignore Zoom and to get out into the real life. However, the group could still decide to do things together also without our computers! :) | Individual editing: More editing of articles! Again, Thomas will be on Zoom to give you feedback and help you if you need anything with your last articles. | ||||
Afternoon (14.00-ca. 17.00 CET) |
Start of the project: We will get to know each other with a few interactive games. Also SCI Switzerland and Wikimedia Switzerland will visit us to introduce themselves. We will also talk about your expectations for the camp and how we want to work together as a group. | Introduction to Antimilitarism and to Wikipedia: Let's get this started! In this crash course, you will learn some basic understandings of what "antimilitarism" is, you will get to know some of the people and organisations in our article list and of course you will learn the first basics how to edit Wikipedia articles. | Check-in + More Introduction to Wikipedia: Now that you've made your first edits, here you will learn some more things that make your Wikipedia articles better. You will also get to know some other Wikip | Check-in + Workshop #1: Corona and the War Industry: We will first have a longer check-in to inspire each other about the people that we wrote about. Afterwards, we will discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on us and the world, also getting to know how political leaders are using militarized language to tackle the pandemic and how the weapons industry is profiting off this crisis. | Check-in + Workshop #2: Alternatives to Military Services: Felix Ziegler is a Swiss SCI activist who in 1967 decided to refuse his military service because of his pacifism. He became a conscientious objector and had to go to prison. He will tell us about his experience! Afterwards, Zaira Zarafana from the peace organisation International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) will tell us about her work supporting conscientious objectors and pushing this topic at the United Nations. | Open Space + Finishing our articles: What topics would you like to go deeper into? What can you share with the rest of the group? Throughout the week we will collect topics to talk about and in this "Open Space" participants have the opportunity to present and discuss things that they would like to bring up. Afterwards we will finish our last articles together! | Celebration + Evaluation: By this point, we will be Wikipedia heroes with many new and improved articles! We will use this time to celebrate and to evaluate the project together. | |
Evening | Free / Self-organized activities: Participants can always propose informal activities in the late afternoon and evening hours such as cooking together, watching a film together or just hanging out :) |
