Hi
[edit]I replied on RFH. πr2 (t • c) 13:37, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:55, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Replied again. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:52, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Question
[edit]Do you want it targeted by country, language, or both? And should it be worldwide on Commons? PiRSquared17 (talk) 14:16, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- (and can you update exactly what you want on Centralnotice/Calendar?) PiRSquared17 (talk) 14:17, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry for being unclear. It should be based on the country, with the main language of the country as the standard (i.e. German for anyone accessing from Austria). In the case of Spain: if the users in Spain have Spanish as their setting that translation should be shown, if they have Catalan that version should be shown. First I was thinking that it should be the same for for Finland (with Swedish and Finnish), but as those CentralNotices have different links I realize that it would not be the best solution (so just show Finnish for users from Finland). So only for Spain the language should change depending on the settings.
- It should be worldwide on Commons.
- I have tried to clarified it on the Calendar. Thanks, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 14:52, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi
[edit]What if a Spanish person has e.g. Croatian in their settings? What version should be shown, Spanish or English? English might be easier. PiRSquared17 (talk) 13:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, that would be the best! So you are looking into this again? That would make my day :) John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 14:01, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. Jalexander has answered our doubts in WM:RFH. Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 22:02, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- Regarding translations, you can see/edit them from here. If you edit a language, set the language status to "ready" so we can know when to apply them to the CN. Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 00:13, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have fixed with all the messages now. Does it look okay? I am not sure if it is suppose to look like this "Durant el mes de maig esteu convidats a participar en el [{{{URL-2}}} concurs Wiki Loves Public Art] fent fotos del tresor d'art públic!", i.e. with the link and the {{{URL-2}}} in the text. If not they should be removed before going out. Best John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 07:21, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- As you hadn't added them before I removed the link and the {{{URL-2}}} now... I hope it is okay! :) John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 07:50, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. Yes, they will not work if I understood the docs correctly. Can I commit the updated messages? Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:55, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- The URL-2 thing inside the text won't work. Banners are raw HTML, not Wikitext. And I like the way the links look now. :) I think they were fine when I uploaded the messages a while back. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:06, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, I see you broke the link. Sorry if I didn't explicitly mention this before! PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:07, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- @PiRSquared17: Hehe, no problem. I am a newbie when it comes to the CN... But I hope that everything is alright now :). John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 19:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- @MarcoAurelio: If you with "commit the updated message" mean that you will activate the CentralNotice banner on all language versions then: yes please do! :) I saw that it was on at de.wikipedia today, but not the other language versions. Is there something we have to do locally as well or will you fix everything? Thank you kindly for all your help! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 19:17, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Messages updated! - The banner was activated today at 00:01, as requested. You can see the current banner settings at [1]. Please note that we currently have more global banners activated (ie: WMF elections are being advertised too) so banners will be changing probably each time you load a page. Geolocation prevents that if you are not accessing the wiki through the countries and territories listed there, you will see no banner at all. Hope that it helps! PiRS can correct me if I'm wrong ;-) Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:38, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- Great, thank you! Well, I saw it on de.wikipedia at least (and I am sitting in Stockholm). I have not seen it on sv.wikipedia today though (only the one about WMF elections), despite reloading the page multiple times with two different user accounts.
- Perhaps you could have a second look if everything is set right? I will try on another computer tomorrow as well.
- Also, we might want the CentralNotice activated on the Hebrew Wikipedia as well in the coming days, is that possible? (Like the other the translation can be found on commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Public Art 2013/Translation team). Best Jopparn (talk) 21:23, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi again!. Banner was activated on hewiki too. WMF election banners were set with priority over the rest by the Foundation so they will show more time than the other banners. I'll be having busy days from now until probably the end of the month. I'll try to assist you whenever I can in this time, but I suggest that you contact with User:Jalexander as he knows CentralNotice much better than me. He is also a Foundation employee; and knows the preference rules on banners, etc. Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! Thank you for the help! However, could you cancel it on hewiki? They don't want it activated. I will talk to Jalexander as well. Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:58, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- This was done! :) Jalexander (talk) 18:05, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

CentralNotice for WLPA on Commons
[edit]Is there a particular reason why you want to have a worldwide banner for WLPA on Commons? This is something that even we at WLM did not decide to have (for obvious reasons)… odder (talk) 14:46, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Aha, then I was misinformed. We were thinking that it would be beneficial for the Commons community in general to know about large photo contests like this, and that it was done during WLM as well. But if that was incorrect I will adjust the request accordingly. Thank you kindly for pointing it out! Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:03, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
WLPA banner in Israel
[edit]I left a note in our thread on my talk page as well however so that you see this ASAP: I have turned off Hebrew and Israel completely. The wiki loves israel website has been compromised and is serving up js scripts files from multiple websites known to distribute malware. I would ask that you also get the other teams to remove that link from all other WLPA sites. I'll send this as an email to you as well. Jalexander (talk) 22:33, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
- Fixed apparently, so reverted some of my edits on hewiki. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:08, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
de-formal translation
[edit]Is there a given de-formal translation too? I guess you could just change it to "können Sie", but there's no way I'm doing that without confirmation. PiRSquared17 (talk) 00:33, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- Is there any template for de-formal, where we could put the translation? I do not know exactly which text you mean. If it is the Central Notice, I am not shure if it can be switched from de to de-formal in the de.WP. Kind regards from --Beppo.S (WMAT) (talk) 10:34, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- You can set your language in Special:Preferences to "de-formal". Yes, it can be put into regular CentralNotice translation. So far I have used "de" and "de-at". So http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hauptseite?uselang=de-formal&banner=WLPA_alt should show "Sie-Form" German, whereas http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hauptseite?uselang=de&banner=WLPA_alt or http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hauptseite?uselang=de-at&banner=WLPA_alt should show regular (Du-Form/informal) German. Currently the "de-formal" one shows English text, which is for the generic (Commons) banner. It should have the localized Austrian German one. Regards, PiRSquared17 (talk) 10:46, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for the information. I did not find the page, where I could add that translation, but you are right: you only have to replace "kannst du" with "können Sie". Please don't hesitate to change that. Regards from --Beppo.S (WMAT) (talk) 11:40, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! - I asked some days ago MF-Warburg (talk · contribs) to do that translation, but I didn't posted it to the CN because we both wanted other to review it. You can find the translated de-formal messages here. If you tell me they're OK, we will push the changes. Best regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:26, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- @MarcoAurelio: The messages have since been updated. PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:31, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- Well, the link to the translate tool is there so they can be modified. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:33, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

DivCon
[edit]Hi John, I promised to ping you and here I do. If you have further questions regarding the working group on senior citizens at DivCon, just let me know. Best --Michael Jahn WMDE (talk) 13:18, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Learning Pattern session
[edit]Hey John! so great to meet you at the divcon. I hope that you made it home safely! During your talk, I found myself writing down several good/best practices you have discovered with your outreach work. These things lend themselves perfectly to learning patterns, and I don't want them to remain only in berlin! they should be shared broadly! Are you available this week to join the Learning Patterns hackathon to help capture some of those learnings? let me know if you can make it ... if not, no problem, you can check it out on your own :) Jwild (talk) 00:21, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Umepedia Challenge
[edit]Hi John, It works better for the Dutch Wikipedia to have a list of wanted articles in the local village pump, so that is what I did: nl:Wikipedia:De_kroeg#Mei_de_schrijfmaand:_Umepedia_Challenge. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 23:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Romaine! Thank you kindly for your help with promoting the contest! As long as people sign up and list their contributions on the participant page anything works for me :-) John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:35, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- Hello John Andersson, Good news! All 40 articles from the list have been translated/written on the Dutch Wikipedia! This was mostly done by DirkVE. Romaine (talk) 03:32, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Great! Thank you Romaine! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 11:36, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Umepedia Commons
[edit]Hey John, I've started to translate in Turkish to help for you. But there's a situation. I can't find visual materials much more. Any options? Kahve6 (talk) 14:30, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Kahve6! There are quite a few Turkish immigrants in Umeå, so that's really valuable! I am not quite sure that I understand your question. Do you mean that you can't find good images for the article your working on? Which article is it and what type of image would you like? Perhaps one of the local volunteers could help and take a photo. Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 16:10, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
Umepedia Challenge
[edit]Sir, I was thinking of creating the articles at first and then add more information. Right now i have created all the articles in Punjabi. Now i am making them in Hindi. Then i am thinking about Urdu and Western Punjabi. How about increasing the number and then i take them from the very beginning and start improving them ? --Satdeep gill (talk) 16:29, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- Dear Satdeep, I do not want to reduce the fun for you, but I am afraid that this would send the wrong signals and trigger more participants to create very short articles, and they might not go back and improve them afterwards. Hence, to prevent that and keep the overall quality high I would kindly ask you to first focus on improving the once in Punjabi and Hindi that you have created, and then continue with the others. Best of luck, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 16:45, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- I have improved two of them now. pa:ਕੁਲਟੂਰਵਾਵੇਨ and pa:ਊਮਿਓ ਟਾਊਨ ਹਾਲ. Now i will keep working on both of them simultaneously. If you agree ? I will create new as well as improve the previous ones. --Satdeep gill (talk) 17:22, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- I am happy to see that! If the new and old articles have that much information in them the potential problem is solved! Regards, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 19:11, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- Till now, I have improved 21 articles. I was thinking of creating a few new articles also. Side by side i will be expanding the previous ones also. --Satdeep gill (talk) 03:15, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- For the past two days i have laid more stress on improving all the previous articles and i have just added three new articles. But i have received no reply from you and i am getting demoralized. --Satdeep gill (talk) 09:58, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Satdeep, my post above from 19:11, 13 May 2014 (UTC) still very much stands :-).
- Thank you once again for your hard work on expanding the articles. It's a pleasure to see them turning into a really valuable educational resource :-)! Best regards, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:16, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Haha. See thats what i wanted. Now i am going to make more contributions and do let me know if you have anything to say. Regards, --Satdeep gill (talk) 10:31, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Challenge
[edit]Sir, When are you going to declare the result of Umepedia Challenge ? --Satdeep gill (talk) 06:46, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- I have the same question. And all the articles are translated into Ukrainian. --Artificial123 (talk) 09:14, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Help decide the future of Wikimania
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).
After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.
In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.
With thanks,
I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 23:46, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Automarking
[edit]Hi there,
I coming from the special:log/patrol where i have seen your edits are automatically "marked".
Perhaps you can help me out with some questions on this subject:
Does this indicate your edits are confirmed or "preapproved" in some way?
Does your status apply only to meta or to english version?
Can i find a parallel status on the english version?
This status puts you in one line with bots, can a regular wikiped ever obtain such a status on any of the Encyclopedia's you know?
Many thanks 12:41, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for participating in Learning Day, Wikimedia Conference 2016
[edit]
Thank you for engaging at Wikimedia Conference 2016 Learning Days!
[edit]Thank you for engaging at Wikimedia Conference 2016 Learning Days!
[edit]Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Thanks for your participation during the Inspire Campaign focused on outreach to outside knowledge networks from February 2017. I'm interested in hearing your experience during the campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating. I want to improve how campaigns are run, so let me know if there's something that could be done better for next time.

The Community Wishlist Survey
[edit]Hi,
You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.
You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Translation
[edit]Hi can you check this please https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_CH/hi&diff=prev&oldid=18919760, translation failed because it could never convert it to the title of "mailto@example" (eg [2]). It says "Transaltion failed", essentially it is not converting itself into a "mailto" email. It could be because of captcha triggering problems. Could you please go and fix it. Thanks.2401:4900:1982:6ADE:9126:3C43:2D31:4B4 09:34, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Finding GLAMs follow-up?
[edit]Hi User:John Andersson (WMSE) - are you considering any FINDING GLAMs follow-up project anytime soon? Zblace (talk) 18:31, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. I've been on paternity leave.
- Yes, we intend to continue working on bringing more data about the world’s GLAM institutions to Wikidata also next year! We are still in the planning process, so I am curious to hear thoughts and ideas. Was there some specific part of the project you were excited about and perhaps would like to be involved in? Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 08:15, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!
18:26, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

Wikimedia Sverige Progress report form
[edit]Hej John! I tabellen på Grants:APG/Proposals/2020-2021 round 1/Wikimedia Sverige/Progress report form#Metrics and results overview - all programs finns en post "3. Number of content pages created or improved, across all Wikimedia projects" som anger att "102,798 (out of the yearly goal of 295,525)" artiklar har blivit skapade eller förbättrade under första halvåret 2021.
John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 07:38, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
We need your feedback on a tool from the Wikimedia Summit
[edit]Hi! I'm contacting you as one of the participants in the Wikimedia Summit 2022, to kindly ask for your feedback through a 5-10 minute survey to evaluate 'Baserow' (note: the survey is on a Google form).
Baserow was tool through which participants in the Summit co-created a database of Movement Strategy activities. We hope to learn from you how useful it may be to keep using it in the future to help document and connect on Movement Strategy work.
You are welcome and encouraged to fill out the survey in any language. Your feedback would be very appreciated --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 13:03, 16 February 2023 (UTC).
