Slayton (NX-05) was a 22nd century United Earth spacecraft, an NX-class starship in United Earth Starfleet service in the 2150s decade. Its commanding officer was Captain Bran Hendricks. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comic: "Issue 3")

History and disposition[]

Early service[]

Slayton goes missing

Slayton is engulfed by the anomaly.

NX-05 was under construction by November 2155 at Proxima Shipyard, and launched in late February 2156. By that time, the Earth-Romulan War was underway. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

This ship shares its registry with Atlantis (NX-05), which is also implicated to be the fifth NX-class ship built.

Slayton was under the command of Captain Hendricks by 2159. In that year, Slayton visited the Wagner-219 star system. A temporal anomaly engulfed the ship and trapped it inside on stardate 2159.19.

Somers and Hendricks

Jack Somers and Bran Hendricks.

47 days later, on stardate 2159.68, the crew was becoming desperate and Hendricks out of ideas. Chief Jack Somers, chief engineer, mutinied against Hendricks. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comics: "Issue 3", "Issue 4")

Outside the anomaly, a century had passed. Starfleet placed the system under quarantine. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comic: "Issue 1")

Escape[]

Slayton escapes

Escape from the temporal anomaly.

In the Kelvin timeline, a team of Starfleet Academy cadets, led by T'Laan, taking part in a race as part of the Starfleet Academy Centennial Games also became trapped in the anomaly. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comic: "Issue 4")

Slayton and Wilson

Meeting the Wilson.

Somers was convinced to abandon his mutiny. Using the Academy training and combining it with the Slayton crew's experience and resources, the ship managed to escape the anomaly. Slayton was greeted by the Armstrong-class USS Wilson upon its emergence. Hendricks responded that he had never been so happy to see another starship in his life.

Slayton crew

San Francisco, 2261.

The cadets lost the race but did not mind, as the rescue of a century-old Earth vessel was celebrated as a high point during the Centennial Celebration at Starfleet Academy. The Slayton crew, now wearing their Federation Starfleet uniforms, joined Academy leadership and the cadet team on the podium. (SA - IDW Starfleet Academy comic: "Issue 5")

Legacy[]

Following the decommissioning of Enterprise NX-01 in 2161, the Endeavour NX-06 remained the last NX-class starship in service. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)

Incidentally, Starfleet recovered another long-lost vessel in 2263. The USS Franklin (NX-326) was also a United Earth vessel that became a Federation Starfleet ship, and was reported lost in the Gagarin Radiation Belt in 2164. Nyota Uhura, who had worked with T'Laan on the mystery with the Wagner-219[1], was part of the crew that recovered the Franklin and brought it to Starbase Yorktown. (TOS movie: Star Trek Beyond)

In the primary universe, the Excelsior-class starship USS Slayton carried on the name. It was in service in the 2370s. (TNG - Section 31 novel: Rogue)

By 2383, the fate of all 15 or 16 built NX-class ships were accounted for. (TNG novel: Indistinguishable from Magic)
