A mechanitron was a type of 23rd century walking vehicle and short-range fighter employed by soldiers of the Klingon Empire.

Specifications[]

The vehicle featured robotic arms and legs, with some sort of thruster or weapon in each palm. It could walk along the ground as well as fly through space. Having the appearance of great strength, it could easily lift a human into the air. A lone pilot operated the gold-colored vehicle with a pair of joysticks and other rudimentary controls from a cockpit located amidships.

Service history[]

Mechanitron fight

Mechanitron fight.

In 2267, a squad of mechanitrons salvaged parts from the crashed starship Ad Aspera on Phygma IV, as allowed by the local population. When a landing party from the USS Enterprise discovered the operation, they learned that they might be able to change the natives' minds through a trial by combat. James T. Kirk fought the Klingon commander using mechanitrons, but Kirk's was sabotaged. Spock came to the rescue with a third machine and dispatched the Klingon commander, winning the bout. Phygmans then allowed Starfleet to take possession of the wreckage.

Meanwhile, five mechanitrons departed from an assault ship to attack the Enterprise directly from orbit. Hikaru Sulu was able to repel them by reversing the polarity of the starship's hull plating. (TOS - Waypoint comic: "The Menace of the Mechanitrons")
