A wound or injury was any of many types of damage which could be done to a lifeform. It could be done deliberately or accidentally, to harm or heal. Those injured during a battle were said to be "wounded in action".
A wound which one perpetrated upon oneself was said to be self-inflicted. (ENT: "Demons", TNG: "The Defector")
A minor wound that only broke the skin was called a flesh wound. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir", VOY: "Worst Case Scenario")
In 2293, Doctor Leonard McCoy was unable to close Chancellor Gorkon's phaser wounds. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
In 2364, Captain Jean-Luc Picard asked Counselor Deanna Troi's opinion on whether the Ligonians would injure the kidnapped Tasha Yar. Troi didn't believe so as the Ligonians seemed mainly curious; however, she did sense some sexual attraction from all the males. (TNG: "Code of Honor")
