The Double-Edged Sword was a double-bladed weapon used by Thanos.
History[]
Massacre of the Korbinites[]
In 2014, Thanos used his Double-Edged Sword during his attack on the Korbinites in Korbin. During the massacre, he learned that the Power Stone had been located on Morag. He then returned to Sanctuary II, where he cleaned the blood off the sword before placing it aside and informing Gamora and Nebula that he would be dispatching them to Ronan the Accuser's ship.[1]
Alternate Reality Versions[]
Cosmic Time Heist[]
In an alternate 2014, Thanos was informed that the Power Stone had been located on Morag. However, as he was ready to deploy Gamora and Nebula to aid Ronan the Accuser, Nebula's network synced with that of another Nebula, who had time traveled from another timeline's 2023. After filtering through the other Nebula's memories and learning about the Infinity War, Thanos decided to travel through the Multiverse using the Quantum Realm in order to arrive in the prime timeline in order to kill the Avengers and acquire the Infinity Stones they possessed, bringing his sword with him.[1]
Attack on the Avengers Compound[]
On board the Sanctuary II, Thanos emerged from the Quantum Tunnel in the Avengers Compound. Thanos then ordered the Compound to be destroyed with several missile strikes. Thanos was then beamed down from the ship, and sitting in the ruins, placed the sword in the ground and hung his helmet from it as he waited for the Avengers to arrive, telling Nebula to find the Infinity Stones.
Upon being found by the Avengers, Thanos collected his helmet and armed himself with his Double-Edged Sword, ready to slaughter his enemies and claim his victory. Thanos used his sword extensively against the team of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, using it to deflect Iron Man's repulsor beams, blocking Thor's attempts to behead him with Stormbreaker and MjĂžlnir, although Thor and Iron Man managed to briefly knock the sword from Thanos' grip. Eventually, Thanos had managed to defeat all of the Avengers who had challenged him, even managing to shatter Captain America's vibranium shield with his powerful strikes from his sword.[1]
Battle of Earth[]
Thanos witnessed as the allies of the Avengers arrived to assist them, as Thanos signaled his own massive army with his sword and the Battle of Earth began with both sides furiously charging straight at each other for their final battle.
As the battle continued, Thanos had used his sword to slaughter members of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, as they attempted to attack him. After Thanos saw the Nano Gauntlet out in the open, with the heroes attempting to get it as far away from him as possible, he threw his sword at Black Panther, only to be confronted by Wanda Maximoff. After a fierce fight, during which Maximoff had blocked Thanos' strike with her powers, Maximoff broke Thanos' sword in half with her powers.
Although his Double-Edged Sword had been broken by Maximoff, Thanos spotted Captain Marvel attempting to get the Gauntlet to Luis' Van, intending to fly it through the Quantum Tunnel and back in time. In response, Thanos furiously hurled one of the broken halves of the sword at the van, before Captain Marvel could enter the Quantum Tunnel with the Nano Gauntlet, destroying the van, the tunnel, and half of the broken sword in the process.[1]

Battle of Titan[]
In Dimension 838, Thanos used the sword in his crusade to collect the Infinity Stones. When he arrived on Titan, he was confronted by the Illuminati and used his sword against them. However, the Illuminati, in a combined effort, defeated Thanos by their combined might and used his sword to kill him, impaling him through the chest with it.[2]
Capabilities[]
This massive Double-Edged Sword was Thanos' primary weapon during his days as a warlord. Other than a melee weapon, it could also be used as a throwing weapon that returned to Thanos like a boomerang. The sword's guards could also form a circle that enabled the blades to spin at great speed. The sword was made from an extremely sturdy material, durable enough to withstand strikes from both Stormbreaker and MjĂžlnir. It was able to break through vibranium, having shattered Captain America's Shield after repeatedly striking it.

Behind the Scenes[]
- Comic book writer Jim Starlin, who created Thanos, mentioned in an interview with Digital Spy that the Double-Edged Sword was inspired by the Thanos-Copter, a helicopter piloted by Thanos in Larry Lieber's Spidey Super Stories. Though he admits he liked Avengers: Endgame more than Avengers: Infinity War, Starlin noted that the Double-Edged Sword was the film's only aspect he really disliked.[3]
- The Thanos-Copter was later introduced in the Loki episode Journey Into Mystery.
- Originally, in the script of Avengers: Endgame, Thanos was going to throw Proxima Midnight's Spear instead of his destroyed sword, and the spear returned to him.[4]
