Synopsis for "Endangered Birds"

The New Mutants have joined Smasher's mission to recruit Deathbird, who is supposed to mentor the future Majestrix Xandra. Regent Gladiator, along with Mentor and Oracle, learns that Deathbird is en route. Oracle advises secrecy about her return due to potential objections from the ruling class. Oracle later betrays them, giving the Shi’ar Death Commandos the ship's location and orders to kill Deathbird and all aboard.

On the ship, Chamber and Mondo discuss their situation and their fellow mutants. As they approach a stargate, the pilot prepares to pass through, and Cypher is told not to interfere with the ship's operations. Sam tries to dissuade Sunspot from approaching Deathbird, but he persists. Despite Smasher's warnings about Deathbird’s status and her child, Sunspot confidently introduces himself to her, boasting about his powers and wealth, only for Deathbird to trump him with her own grand lineage and wealth.

The ship encounters an Imperial dreadnought that jams their communications and orders them to surrender. The Death Commandos, led by Black Cloak, prepare to board the ship under the pretense of searching for contraband but plan to kill everyone aboard and capture Deathbird.

The New Mutants learn of the impending threat as Cypher decrypts a message revealing the Death Commandos' true intentions. Deathbird explains her political significance and why someone would want her dead. Magik takes charge, ordering Mirage, Karma, and Wolfsbane to handle the boarding party while she quickly disposes of Flaw, Hypernova, and Offset

Black Cloak, upon losing contact with his teams, orders the destruction of Smasher's ship, leaving it damaged and the passengers in the vacuum of space.
