Paper Mario Mario & Luigi

"Eat a Mushroom to regain your energy!"
—Sign on Goomba Road

Mushrooms are a recurring healing item throughout the Mario games, having first appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Using a Mushroom restores Mario or another character's HP, and can be purchased from various shops. Mushrooms do not generally refill the entirety of one's HP, and have more effective variations such as Super Shrooms.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

The Mushroom is a healing item that restores 30 HP upon use. These Mushrooms can be bought for four coins at various Item Shops. Mushrooms also appear within treasure boxes on the overworld, and obtaining it fully restores the party's HP and FP.

In Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario[]

"A regular Mushroom. Restores 5 HP."
—Description
Mushroom (Paper Mario)

In Paper Mario, mushrooms are the most recurring healing item. When consumed, this item restores five HP. Mushrooms are found in stores in the beginning of the game. Aside from being a usable item, Mushrooms can also serve as an ingredient in several different recipes. By cooking a single Mushroom, Mario can receive a Fried Shroom.

On Goomba Road, Mario will encounter a sign with a Mushroom mounted on it. Further down on Goomba Road is another sign with a Mushroom mounted on it, however, when Mario reads this sign, the Mushroom flips over to reveal a Goomba.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[]

Mushroom (TTYD)

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mushrooms have the same effects as in Paper Mario. Like all other healing items, Mushrooms can also be used on partners.

Super Paper Mario[]

In Super Paper Mario, Mushrooms are not actually carry-on items but instead appear only out of Question Blocks. Super Shrooms and Ultra Shrooms also appear in this way. Their inventory equivalent is Shroom Shakes.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[]

Main article: Mushroom Sticker

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Mario does use Mushrooms, but rather Mushroom Stickers which recover 20 HP. If Mario performs the action command correctly, Mario recovers thirty points of HP.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

Max Mushroom MLSS sprite

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mushrooms instead restore only 25 HP. As shown from their sprite, Mushrooms lack facial features, and the color of their cap was reversed into becoming a white cap with red spots, also shared with Super Mushrooms and Max Mushrooms. A Mushroom is one of the cheapest items sold at an Item Shop, where it can be bought for 24 coins each.

Mushrooms have a "Super" variant that heals 50 hit points, an "Ultra" variant that restores 120, and a "Max" variant that heals the target completely.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

Mushroom M&LPIT sprite

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mushrooms retain their standard design instead of the one from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. They now restore only 20 HP, and are sold at Item Shops for 10 coins each. Their "Super" variant heals 40 hit points, the "Ultra" variant 80, and the "Max" variant healing the target completely.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

Mushroom BiS sprite

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mushrooms restore 30 HP, like in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They cannot be used by Bowser, who has to rely on chicken drumsticks instead. Their "Super" variant heals 60 hit points, the "Ultra" variant 120, and the "Max" variant 240.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

In Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, regular and Super Mushrooms retain their healing values from the previous game. However, the Ultra and Max Mushrooms had their healing values nerfed further, healing 100 and 160 hit points, respectively.
