- "I thought Sylens was helping me when he gave me his Lance…"
- ―Aloy
The Point of the Lance is the second main quest in Horizon Forbidden West.
Synopsis[]
Inside the ruins of the Far Zenith Launch Facility, Aloy is excited to find what she believes to be a backup of GAIA, but it turns out to be a fake, much to her frustration. Varl soon catches up, and he is astonished to see a projection of GAIA, believing it to be the All-Mother of Nora mythology, only for Aloy to angrily remind him that said goddess doesn't exist. They subsequently exit the ruins together.
With her search still not over, Aloy decides to leave Varl behind, not wanting to endanger him any further. However, before she can leave, Varl recalls Sylens' previous help to Aloy, but she hadn't heard from him since the battle against HADES. Varl suggests going to Meridian and consulting Blameless Marad, citing the latter's good ability to locate people. Aloy reluctantly agrees, and when Varl suggests walking, she overrides two Chargers to use as mounts for the long journey to Meridian.
At the city's gates, Carja citizens welcome Aloy as the "Savior of Meridian" and present her with flowers. Marad arrives shortly afterwards and asks Aloy and Varl to follow him to the Alight to discuss an urgent matter. Once there, he explains that a strange occurrence took place right after the solstice, where a red light rose up from the base of the Spire, from the Horus core that had contained HADES (referencing the post-credits cutscene from the previous game), prompting Aloy to investigate it. When she pulls out the lance embedded in the core and scans it with her Focus, Aloy is shocked to see a file that reads "transmission complete", followed by a signal from the top of the Spire as the lance disintegrates into ashes. Immediately suspecting foul play, Aloy climbs to the top of the Spire to investigate, where she overrides the transmission node, sending a signal somewhere to the far west. Sylens appears as a hologram and expresses his surprise at Aloy taking so long to discover his ruse: he had rigged the lance to capture and interrogate HADES. Aloy is furious at his perceived recklessness, but he is quick to dismiss her anger and invites her to use the coordinates from the earlier signal and follow him into the Forbidden West to learn everything that he had discovered.
Aloy climbs back down and shares her new findings with Varl and Marad. Upon learning of her intention to go into the Forbidden West, Marad warns Aloy that the region's ruling power, the Tenakth, don't allow anyone past its borders. He does however mention that a peace had been negotiated between the Carja and the Tenakth, and that if she were to attend the upcoming Embassy, Aloy might be granted right of passage into the West. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Sun-King Avad and his entourage, who express their gratitude to Aloy for saving their city and present her with gifts including a spear and a tiara of Carja making. After this, Aloy has the option to reconnect with some of her old friends (including Sun-King Avad, Uthid, Vanasha, Itamen, and Nasadi) before attaching the Master Override to her new spear at a Workbench. Marad provides Aloy and Varl with information on the Embassy and the path into the West, and arranges accommodation for the two when Aloy decides to rest in Meridian for the night and head out the following morning.
Later that night, Aloy quietly sneaks out as Varl sleeps and rides off into the Forbidden West on her own.

Trivia[]
- The quest's name is a callback to the third main quest in Horizon Zero Dawn titled The Point of the Spear. The name also serves a double meaning as it is about Aloy discovering what was the point of Sylens giving her his spear.
