~ King Acorn before he is sucked into The Void by Robotnik in Blast to the Past, Part 2. |
King Acorn is a supporting character from the SatAM Sonic cartoon and the Sonic comics. He is the father of Sally Acorn and the former rightfully ruler of Mobotroplis. He was voiced by Tim Curry, who also voiced The Keeper of the Time Stones and voiced Nigel Thornberry in the Wild Thornberries.
History[]
SatAM[]
King Acorn was the ruler of Mobotroplis until he was betrayed by his ministor Julian Knitobor, who would later become Dr. Robotnik. Before his treachery, Robotnik helped the King during a time of war. After Robotnik helped the king and his kingdom calm victory during the war Robotnik betrayed King Acorn who believed that they didn't need any weapons or military after the war was over. The King was banished to the Void along with Naugus, not before telling Robotnik that he would regret it. With the King gone and no defenses, Robotnik took over Mobotropolis, renaming it Robotoropolis and then later on the rest of the planet.
Approximately eleven years after his imprisonment in the Void, Ixis Naugus took the form of a sick King so that Sonic, who had arrived in the Void with Sally and Bunnie Rabbot, would free him from the Void. After Sonic saved the false King, the real King arrived with Ari the Ram and greeted Sally, who threw herself into his arms, crying. Later, Sonic saved the King, Sally, Bunnie and Ari from the Void. The King was free again, but not for long. It turned out that his body had begun to crystallize due to him having been too long in the Void, and the only way he could save himself from becoming a lifeless crystal statue was to return to the Void with Naugus. Knowing that he had to leave, the King told a saddened Sally to take the list of all the Freedom Fighter groups from his pocket. After she had done so, the King said good-bye to his daughter and returned to the Void with Naugus.
The King's history was later slightly altered when Sonic and Sally went back in time with the Time Stones to stop Dr. Robotnik before he rose to power. In the past, after the King had dismissed Julian, Sir Charles Hedgehog asked him for an audience. Although he heard from him that Julian was plotting against him, he did not believe Charles' story at first. However, he then met the Sonic and Sally from the future, and he recognized his daughter after taking notice of her appearance, her royal signet ring, and her familiarity with the family creed. Just as the King started to believe their warning however, Dr. Robotnik's forces surrounded the palace and all who were inside. The king was subsequently dethroned and captured, but Sonic and Sally managed to escape. Later, the King was exiled to the Void by Robotnik, like in the original timeline.
In the episode Drood Henge, the voice of the King appeared, which came from the message he recorded about the Deep Power Stones, which was played by Nicole.
Archie Comics[]
Pre-Super Genesis Wave[]
Maximilian Acorn is the son of King Fredrick Acorn and next in-line to rule the Kingdom of Acorn. As per royal tradition, Max bonded himself with a sentient primordial substance called the Source of All which would help guide him in life through magical means. After appointing Ixis Naugus as his Royal Wizard, King Fredrick took in an Overlander named Nate Morgan who Maximilian came to see as an uncle-like figure and would remain by his side during the squirrel's own reign as king upon marrying his arranged wife Alicia. However, as time went on, tensions between the Mobians and Overlanders rose, and Nate eventually left the kingdom voluntarily when concerns were raised over his loyalty to the crown, much to Max's disappointment.
Eventually the tensions with the Overlanders boiled over into a full scale war that had the Mobians at a disadvantage against their adversaries' technology. King Maximilian tried to get his wife Alicia and their son Elise to safety via aircraft but the Overlanders managed to intercept the vehicle on its way to Angel Island and proceeded to wipe out everyone aboard. Not long after this, Sir Charles the Hedgehog and his brother Jules brought in a wounded Overlander named Julian Kintobor who sought shelter after he fled from his own people in the badlands. Having lost family and still guilty for what happened with Nate Morgan, Max allowed Julian to stay in the Kingdom of Acorn and soon appointed him as his new Minister of War due to his knowledge of Overlander tactics. Together they were able to turn the tide of conflict in favor of the Mobians' before claiming victory once Max managed to best the Overlanders' leader Charlemagne in a fateful dual.
With the war won, King Maximilian intended to give Julian the position of Science Minister as he had no need for a war ministry now that peace was assured. However Kintobor had his own agenda and unleashed an army of SWATbots upon the kingdom's capital of Mobotropolis once he convinced Max to also dismantle his military forces. Max was then brought before Julian, who now called himself Doctor Ivo Robotnik, and swore he would pay for his treachery before being banished into the Zone of Silence.
Post-Super Genesis Wave[]
King Nigel Acorn is the joyful, kind and considerate ruler of the Acorn Archipelago that serves his kingdom from its capital city of Mobotropolis. One day, a human scientist named Ivo Robotnik approached him and claimed that the government organization G.U.N. are plotting to invade his kingdom, something Nigel had always feared might occur. He rewarded Robotnik with access to the kingdom's resources and appointed him as his new royal adviser, a position previously held by his good friend Dr. Ellidy. Unfortunately, Nigel would discover too late that his new advisor was not at all like his friend, when Robotnik unleashed an army of Badniks to take over Mobotropolis before the King is sent away into the Special Zone.

Trivia[]
- Because of problems with Ken Penders, Archie and Sega King Acorn along with the other characters from the 1993 cartoon series had to be changed to look more like characters from Sonic video games to fit the new storyline.
- Additionally, while King Acorn's second name was left unchanged, as it was introduced in SatAM's development bible, his first name was changed from Maximillian to Nigel, as the former name was introduced by Penders himself.
- Because Tim Curry is the voice for King Acorn and Nigel Thornberry, the two characters share the same speech pattern in the cartoon series and in the comics after the Genesis Wave.
