Hero Overview

Ah, Perry the Platypus.
~ Doofenshmirtz's catchphrase when Perry approaches.
Curse you, Perry the Platypus!
~ Doofenshmirtz's catchphrase after being frequently defeated.

Dr. Heinz L. Doofenshmirtz is the former main antagonist of the Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb. He is the former arch-nemesis turned best friend of Perry the Platypus.

Though he is one of the main antagonists of the show, Doofenshmirtz is actually put in the situation to add comedic tensions. He has several quirks in the series: whenever Perry breaks into his base, he says something sarcastic, such as "Perry the Platypus, how completely unexpected, and by 'unexpected' I mean 'completely expected'!". On one occasion he actually makes up a word to counteract this while meeting Perry, "Perry the Platypus, how completely unpredictable, and by 'unpredictable' I mean… 'dictable'." Another notable quirk is his tendency to put the "-inator" suffix at the end of names for his evil creations.

Despite the fact that he is one of the main antagonists of the show, Doofenshmirtz plays an anti-heroic role at times. He helped Phineas and Ferb and the Resistance defend the Tri-State Area from his 2nd Dimension counterpart as well as Danville from the Red Skull, MODOK, Venom and Whiplash. One of his most redeeming qualities is his genuine love for his daughter, Vanessa, to the point where he travelled all over the world with Major Monogram and Perry to get her back. Aside from this, Doofenshmirtz is completely oblivious to most things despite being a scientist. He has virtually no perception of Perry without his hat, even when his 2nd Dimension counterpart makes it completely clear to him, and is incredibly ignorant to the fact that his daughter tries to reveal his evil nature to his ex-wife. Milo Murphy’s Law reveals him to be none other than the legendary hero and founder of time travel, Professor Time.

He is voiced by Dan Povenmire, who is also one of the co-creators of the series.

Appearance[]

Doofenshmirtz is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and very slender, but he slouches, which causes him to appear shorter. As a youth he was considerably short for his age. His limbs and fingers are bony and gangly. His legs are usually bent when he stands and walks, and he has a noticeable hunchback.

Heinz's usual apparel is a sleeveless black turtleneck shirt, under a long, thin white lab coat. With that he wears long gray or dark green slacks, and black shoes, and more recently, his shoes seem to have a small heel.

He has a tattoo of the word evil in purple ink with a pointed tail coming from the L on his left bicep. When hit with the beam for his Ugly-inator, a device with makes anything the beam hits horribly ugly, he remains the same. He and his 2nd dimension self-consider themselves handsome.

When Doofenshmirtz drank the cutonium, his height dropped down to around 2 feet, with larger, bluish-purple sparkling eyes, rounder face, normal nose, and shorter hair with a pair of smaller feet pajama-like pants with smaller black shirt and white lab coat with a pinkish-purple aura emitting from him, while also having a higher and slightly squeakier voice like a baby, as to looking much like a baby. Heinz resembles a monster called Der Kinderlumper, as they both have a broom-like nose and a crooked neck.

Personality[]

Despite being the source of all evil in the Tri-State Area, Doofenschmirtz can actually go from being a truly ruthless megalomaniac to an actually bumbling and jovial person. Though he does possess streaks of actual villainy for the best part he is actually incompetent, naive and overly dramatic. He also possesses a heavily Germanised accent and tends to speak over the top which he thinks makes him appear sinister and maniacal but in reality just goofy and eccentric. Doofenshmirtz gets easily envious of his successful brother, Roger who is the mayor of the Tri-State Area and has a tendency to always place the suffix "-inator" at the end of his creations however on one occasion he named his creation, Shrinkspheria as believed the inator was "done to death" and in one episode actually came to the conclusion that him placing "inator" on his evil creations was the cause of the his constant failure so he counteracted this by naming his invention "non-inator".

Over time, Doofenshmirtz has begun acting more out of love for routine rather than actual evil lust something which his nemesis, Parry the Platypus respects and follows. He was clearly hurt when his new nemesis, Peter the Panda sabotaged his inator while he was having a flashback and actually gave Perry's replacement (a rhino) a chance to foil him, claiming "this was more fun with Perry the Platypus" showing despite the fact he receives constant pain from the latter, showing on some levels he enjoys their dynamic routine. It's also revealed despite the face he constantly traps Perry the Platypus, they were designed so that he escape on time.

Doofenshmirtz is also hard to place. While he is goofy, eccentric and bumbling there are occasions when he is an actual mad scientist at heart; conniving, sneaky, a truly diabolical planner and hell-bent on the domination of the Tri-State Area. He also tends to act out of spite for his miserable life other than simple power lust. He was prepared to destroy the entire Tri-State Area's collection of gnomes out of petty vengeance for him being forced to be the garden gnome as a child and actually destroyed Christmas for the entire city of Danville simply because he was annoyed with carollers. He also doesn't set his megalomaniacal standards high, other than the Tri-City Area. Other than this he was genuinely disgusted by his apprentice, Rodrigo's ambition to conquer the world, claiming it was "left-boot crazy".

Despite his bumbling nature, Doofenshmirtz is actually a mechanical genius, able to create countless evil inventions as well his own AI, Norm whom he constantly abuses. There are rare moments when Doofenshmirtz does genuine evil deeds but normally does them for ridiculous reasons such as attempting to destroy the moon because he believed there would be "no more stupid camp songs about the moon" and on this regard he also doesn't think on the larger scale of things, being normally quite rash and impulsive; not thinking blowing up the moon would actually destroy the Earth, simply because he wanted to impress his professor. On another note he attempted to drill through the Earth and reach China, ignoring the fact there was magma at the centre of the Earth.

He is also poorly romantic, his marriage with ex-wife, Charlene fell apart completely as well she constantly sends him alimony cheques (which he uses to fund his evil innovations) and Charlene is completely oblivious to her ex-husband's evil and maniacal nature. They have a steady and tactile relationship, to this day. On one occasion he actually created a device that would eradicate love from Earth however on the same day he had a date whom he fell head over heals for because of their shared interest: evil. However near the end of their date, his anti-love ray ends up zapping her, making her feel nothing for him whatsoever. The only person Doofenshmirtz's shows any care for is his daughter, Vanessa.

Overall, Doofenshmirtz remains an embittered, emotionally crippled little boy from the trauma of his childhood (which he uses as an excuse to fuel his evil actions). He was neglected by his parents, overshadowed by his more successful and talented brother and was made a social recluse. Some of Doofenshmirtz's notable backstories is when he won a balloon which he deemed Balloon-y and became his best friend until one day he floated away, forced to be the garden gnome when his family was forced to sell their collection, being forced to wear dresses by his parents as they expected Roger to be a girl and his beloved childhood toy being given to his brother after he just gave it to his mother.

Doofenshmirtz has a dynamic relationship with his nemesis, Perry the Platypus. Though it's been established they are hated rivals, they actually have a frenemy relationship. An example is when Doofenshmirtz replaced Perry with Peter the Panda and the platypus walked in on their battle he was clearly ashamed and attempted hide it like a husband would do if he was caught cheating. Perry himself was clearly depressed that he had been replaced and Doofenshmirtz gave a very heartfelt apology for doing so. Perry and Doofenshmirtz are on a friendly basis, capable of having formal tea together, picking each other up when they are down and even work together at times.

Doofenshmirtz is also a musical buff, normally breaking out in spontaneous song ignoring the fact he doesn't have the best singing voice. He also fawns over his favourite band, Love Händel, normally featuring them in his flashbacks and created his own jingle (which he never finished).

Biography[]

Early Life[]

In his early life, Heinz was just a simple little boy living presumably somewhere in an Eastern European country called Drusselstein. Mr. and Mrs. Doofenshmirtz, his parents, often abused him and forced him to be their lawn gnome when their real one was repossessed; his only friend was the moon (and his neighbor Kenny). His younger brother Roger was the one in the family to get way more attention than Heinz, which lead him into a life of jealousy of how Roger lived his life.

This was further intensified when Roger was elected Mayor of Danville, which caused Heinz to develop schemes to discredit or humiliate Roger. Heinz's first invention was called "Inator" (he still was not good at naming inventions back then), which does nothing but shoot a ray of plasma into outer space. He entered it in a Science Fair, but lost to a baking soda volcano. On the next science fair, he entered an "Even-Bigger-Inator", but still lost to another baking soda volcano.

Phineas and Ferb[]

During his teenage years after moving to America, Heinz sarcastically stated he would rule the world, but his former girlfriend Linda Flynn (who would later become the mother of Phineas and Candace Flynn) convinced him to start small with the Tri-State Area. Doing so, he gained an evil business (after his bratwurst-vending business was put out of business thanks to the hot dog vending industry). He also gained and a new nemesis, O.W.C.A. Agent Perry the Platypus (or Agent P for short), who is also Phineas and Ferb's pet.

Almost every typical episode features Doofenshmirtz who subjects Perry into a trap and hatches an evil scheme or invention that he often links to a "back story" from his youth. The stories explore his mentally abusive and shunned childhood in the fictional village of Drusselstein. As such, Perry would find himself out from the trap, and go to defeat Doofenshmirtz, who would yell out in defeat, "Curse you, Perry the Platypus!" Perry's battles with Doofenshmirtz is also the primary reason behind destruction of whatever form of contraption that Phineas and Ferb are building in order to make summer better. Phineas and Ferb are aware that something happens to get rid of their scheme for the day, but do not know that Perry is the cause behind it and are largely dismissive of it. Their sister, Candace, also does not know that Perry is behind the destruction and is driven to near insanity trying to figure it out.

Though it may seem that Doofenshmirtz and Perry see each other as nemeses, they were times when they tend to be civil towards each other. They seem to take light over their daily brawl and cannot stand to live without this function. Even when Doofenshmirtz temporarily replaces Perry with another O.W.C.A. agent, Perry seems to be very depressed and misses Doofenshmirtz so much, revealing that his battles against Doofenshmirtz's schemes is what gave his life heroic cause.

Also, in other occasions, depending on whatever situation Doofenshmirtz is facing, Perry would often help Doofenshmirtz with his plans that are not evil in nature, such as helping the doctor overcome evil scientist's block, helping him put on a birthday party for his 16-year-old daughter Vanessa, impressing a square dancing girl with boots that Doofenshmirtz created to follow the commands of square dancing, working together to stop a raging platypus hunter from hunting them down, or having him to call his rich ex-wife Charlene to lend him some money to pay off his mortgage debt. Also, Perry tends to use several of Doofenshmirtz's inventions, most likely to clean up and erase any evidence of whatever inventions Phineas and Ferb made, leaving Candace unable to bust them to her mom. Most good examples were when Perry asked to borrow Doofenshmirtz's robot Norm to pick up several footage from the city surveillance cameras in order to save his job as an agent, as well as using Doofenshmirtz's Pick-Him-Up-inator to rescue a lost Candace and bring her home.

Doofenshmirtz was also a member of a group of evil scientists called the League Of Villainous Evildoers Maniacally United For Frightening Investments in Naughtiness (aka L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N.), which he founded. He later left the organization after learning that they came up with a ruthless plan for worldwide domination based on one of his few successful schemes, something which he was disgusted to hear about. Eventually, in the fourth season finale Last Day of Summer, Doofenshmirtz decided to give up doing evil so that he can let Vanessa join O.W.C.A.'s internship program. He is last seen talking with Norm, Vanessa and Perry about their past adventures while having muffins.

Milo Murphy's Law[]

Doofenshmirtz made a cameo appearance in the episode "Fungus Among Us", where Milo Murphy, Diogee, Vinnie Dakota, Balthazar Cavendish and Orton Mahlson were accidentally trapped inside his lair during the Pistachions' takeover of the Earth and the time stream (formulated by Derek, one of the sons of King Pistachion), which Doofenshmirtz managed to evade for unknown reasons. It later turns out that in the hour-long special "The Phineas and Ferb Effect" that Doofenshmirtz would go on to become the future inventor of time-travel known as Professor Time, which he utilizes in helping Orton erase the Pistachions from existence and restoring the original timeline for good. It also turns out that Doof's time-travel technology would lead to the creation of the Bureau of Time Travel in the future, where people would only use it to manipulate and maintain the space-time continuum on a global scale.

Despite being delighted that he saved the day and that he would get to be someone important in the future, Doofenshmirtz is very upset to see his building crumbling down due to Murphy's Law, forcing him to move into the Murphys' residence for a while. Eventually, he build a place in the Murphys' backyard from himself and Norm to live for a while trying to build new inators to do good throughout the series, though they end up causing disastrous results, much to his frustration. He is even more frustrated and outraged of the fact that O.W.C.A. still thinks of him as dangerous in spite of his retirement from evil, even breaking up with Perry after learning that he was still spying on him per their orders, despite Perry's remorse over it. In spite of this, Doofenshmirtz takes solace in hanging out with Dakota (as the latter is depressed following his breakup with Cavendish).

Eventually, Doofenshmirtz soon learns that the Octalians (led by their commander) have kidnapped Milo as their planet is facing an imminent crisis involving a large sphere of negative probability ions. During the trip to the alien planet, Dakota reconciles with Cavendish while Doof patches up with Perry after learning that the latter is giving some of his earnings as compensation so that he can rebuild his company as Professor Time Industries and continue his path in becoming Professor Time. Doof also utilized his new inator called the Reduce-inator to help contain the sphere, allowing Milo and his friends to distribute it to all Octalians in order to save their planet. With the deed done, the Octalians returned the favor by allowing Doofenshmirtz and the others a ship to fly back home to Earth in peace.

Hamster and Gretel[]

Doofenshmirtz makes a cameo in the Hamster and Gretel episode "Strawberry Festival Forever", where he appears at the Strawberry Festival, witnesses the destruction of Ballooney.

He makes another cameo in the episode "Shush Hour", where he was advertising his Sush-inator on the Internet.

Other Incarnations[]

In addition of mainstream as detailed in this page, Phineas & Ferb series introduced other incarnations of the character, be it Heinz Doofenshmirtz's own lookalike, ancestors, and alternate interdimensional counterparts. Following alternate Heinz Doofenshmirtz introduced in the series are:

Jekyll Doofenshmirtz[]

Victorian era version of Heinz Doofenshmirtz which confirmed to be the latter's great-great-grandfather. He is an experimenter who invented a machine designed to help brewing a potion which turns the drinker into either a fairy or a Mr. Hyde-esque monster.

2nd Dimension Heinz Doofenshmirtz[]

The 2nd Dimension Heinz Doofenshmirtz, is the main antagonist of the 2011 TV film Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension. He is the 2nd Dimension counterpart of Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and the head ruler of the 2nd Dimension Tri-State Area. He later returns as the secondary antagonist in the 2014 episode sequel, Tales From the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension.

Doofengung[]

Heinz Doofenshmirtz's prehistoric ancestor introduced in "Tri-Stone Area".

Jealous of his brother Ro-juh (Roger's ancestor) whose lair being better his, Doofengung attempts to drive Ro-juh away from his territory by using a stick to provoke a nearby mammoth herd. This doesn't go unnoticed by Monobrow (Monogram's ancestor) who in turn, dispatches Bunka da Bunka Quwonk to stop him. However, his incompetence in such scheme resulted the herd to destroy his decaying cave home along with Phinabunk and co.'s prehistoric car instead thus resulting Bunka da Bunka Quwonk's interference proved unnecessary.

Doofus Khan[]

Heinz Doofenshmirtz's lookalike from (possibly) alternate 1542 China.

Malifishmertz[]

Heinz Doofenshmirtz's counterpart from a tale in "Excaliferb". He is a powerful sorcerer who have a feud against Parable the Dragonpus for scheming to take over Tri-Kingdom Area.

Doofenshmirtz (1914)[]

Doofenshmirtz's lookalike and possible ancestor from 1914 in "Phineas and Ferb and the Temple of Juatchadoon". He is an evil archaeologist who serves as the rival to Ohio Flynn and Rhode Island Fletcher as much as the same era's Perry the Platypus.

Professor Von Doofenshmirtz[]

Doofenshmirtz's lookalike and possible ancestor from "Steampunx".

Darthemshmirtz[]

Darthenshmirtz is the main antagonist in the Phineas and Ferb special "Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars".

He is the Sith counterpart of Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and just like his original counterpart, Darthenshmirtz is somewhat incompetent in doing evil and is enemies with Perry the Rebelpus, the Jedi counterpart of Perry the Platypus. He is also a low-level employee working under the Galactic Empire and the lowest of all Darths, having a low level of midiclorians but still able to somewhat use the Force.

Trivia[]

  • In the 2011 TV film Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, Doofenshmirtz meets his alternate reality counterpart, who has proven to be far more competent and successful in doing evil as he rules his Tri-State Area with an iron fist for 5 years.
  • Although Doofenshmirtz is one of the main antagonists of the Phineas and Ferb series, he rarely ever met Phineas and Ferb, with the exception of the films, the episodes "Bullseye!" and "Night of the Living Pharmacists", and Milo Murphy's Law. Plus, he has no direct conflict with the boys, as he is unaware that his battles against Perry is what made the boys' inventions disappear in the first place.
    • While Candace has a direct conflict against her brothers, she's more of anti-heroine instead of proper main antagonist and villain like Doofenshmirtz does, occasionally joining Phineas and Ferb's antics if it benefits her and even enlisting their aid in solving certain crisis such as Mindless Repulsive Pharmacists outbreak. Moreover, Candace's obsession to bust her brothers is because of their approach in building their inventions behind their parents' back comes off as reckless even with precautions they made instead of mere jealousy over their genius and creativity hence her disgust towards Super Super Big Doctor's more radical approach in deaking her similarly talented younger brothers.
  • According to his ex-wife Charlene, she and Doofenshmirtz broke up because they did not find anything in common with each other. However, in the episode "Bee Day", Doof reveals that the real reason behind their divorce was because Charlene hated a poorly crafted hand puppet named Mr. Tomato that Doof made for entertainment, which Charlene actually concurred on. In spite of this, she maintained a civil relationship with him, and would often send him an alimony check every month, which would contribute to how he was able to buy parts to create his -inators.
    • However, in the 2014 episode "Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension", it is revealed that their alternate reality counterparts are still married to each other and that they formed a fake divorce for financial advantages. Also, unlike the original Charlene, her alternate reality counterpart happens to be as evil as her husband, as she staged a successful plan to free him from prison in case he was overthrown.
  • Doofenshmirtz's daughter Vanessa is annoyed by his constant megalomania and his attempts to make her evil. However, in spite of this, she does seem to appreciate of what he is trying to do to make her happy, and shows some recognition when he succeeds on it. Also, in a lighter note, Vanessa admits to being a little evil in nature, such as stealing a motor scooter, as well as snatching a doll from a little girl, and holding up Major Monogram and Agent P with a hair dryer when they attempted to arrest her dad.
    • In the 2014 episode "Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension", it turns out that Vanessa's alternate reality counterpart is just as evil as her family, as she helped them escape arrest for their crimes against humanity.
  • Doofenshmirtz had a balloon named Balloony during his childhood, which was later stolen by Mitch. Eventually, the balloon was returned to Doof following Mitch's second arrest, though it would be later popped before the events of the episode "This Is Your Backstory".
  • In the Halloween episode "That's the Spirit", Doofenshmirtz created a device to transfer a part of his mind to a cow so it would destroy grass out of hatred instead of hunger, which accidentally caused him to turn into a Were-Cow. It is unknown how he turned back to normal.
  • In the episode "Perry the Actorpus", he created a laser-gun to give everybody a big mustache. When he imagined his future victims with this weapon, he mentioned Fu Manchu (who is recognized for his notable mustache).
  • His last name means "stupid pain" in German, which somewhat relates to his tragic childhood and eccentric behavior.
  • There is a joke in which someone assumes Doofenshmirtz to be a "pharmacist" due to his lab coat, much to his annoyance; he even lampshades this in "Night of the Living Pharmacists". However, in Milo Murphy's Law, the joke is dropped as no one refers to him as such anymore.
  • In the Ducktales episode "The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee!", GizmoDuck faces a mad scientist named Atmoz Fear, who bears a lot of a resemblance to Doofenshmirtz (mostly in appearance).
  • Doofenshmirtz is ranked fifth in the Top 20 Greatest Disney Channel Villains Ever by MsMojo.
  • It's worth nothing that if Doof had been born in the United States and then was abused by his family as in his backstories, he would have long been rescued by Child Protective Services and sent to a better foster home; his parents would rightfully have been sent to prison for decades. Or at the very least taken to an orphanage where he would have been treated with basic human decency for a child.
