This book contained a map to the location of the Map Chamber. It was a piece of a trial created by the Keepers to lead a potential student of ancient magic to it.

History[]

During the Tudor period, the Keepers created a trial for those who could perceive ancient magic. A container with a key to Vault 12 led to a locket.[2] Within it was a map with traces of ancient magic over the Restricted Section.[3] A search of the Library revealed other traces of ancient magic which led to the Athenaeum. Within its Antechamber, they would find the book levitating above a pensieve.[4] The book had a map to the Map Chamber.[5]

At some point in the 18th century, Peeves wrecked things in the Library. He ripped out pages of the book, including a map, which he then dropped. A student, Richard Jackdaw found the pages. He thought it led to treasure so he decided to find it. Upon entering a cave, he was decapitated. The pages lay with his remains for a century.[5]

In the 1890s, a student who could perceive ancient magic found the book, after they snuck into the Restricted Section using the Disillusionment Charm. They took it to Eleazar Fig who discovered there were pages missing.[4] The student started investigating, which led them to the ghost of Richard. He offered to take them to the cave where he died to retrieve the pages.[5][6]

The student entered the cave where they found the missing pages. They used the map to find the Map Chamber where they spoke to a portrait of Percival Rackham. Without the book, he told the student they could not continue. The student spoke to Professor Fig who agreed to bring the book to the chamber.[6][1]

Percival told Fig to put the book on the pedestal. It revealed a spectral map of Hogwarts with the location of four trials they had to pass in order to develop their skills with ancient magic.[1]
