Vault 12 was a vault located in the deepest part of Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The vault had an Anti-Disapparition Jinx placed on it.[1]

History[]

Vault number twelve was commissioned by Percival Rackham and Charles Rookwood shortly after Gringotts was founded (some time after 1474).[2] They created a path to it that only one with the ability to detect ancient magic could successfully follow to discover their secrets, including a key which served as a Portkey. They left instructions that once those with the key entered it, the door was to be locked. Nobody opened it for hundreds of years.[1]

The vault's entrance

On 1 September 1890, Eleazar Fig and his new fifth-year student visited this vault after using the Portkey left by the late Miriam Fig. They travelled through ancient ruins where they crossed a never-used portal to Gringotts. A goblin banker gave them access then threw away the key, using the same instructions that had been left to him hundreds of years ago. It appeared that Fig and his student had to "earn their way out".[1]

The vault appeared to be empty, but the student used their ability of seeing ancient magic to get to another area. After some fights with animated Guardian statues, they looked into a Pensieve there showing Percival and Charles setting up the vault from a locket that contained the memory of them. The goblin Ranrok then entered and attempted to duel Fig, but an animated knight came out and fought against him, allowing Fig and the student to escape with the locket.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The vault's final defending knight also attempted to attack Fig shortly before he and the player escaped. The reasons behind this are unknown. It might have been 'programmed' to attack anybody who did not possess ancient magic.
