Fentanyl is a huge and growing problem. Bad enough that people who know that they are taking it are dying from it, but far worse that it is sneaking iFentanyl is a huge and growing problem. Bad enough that people who know that they are taking it are dying from it, but far worse that it is sneaking into packages of white powder sold as other stuff so that it kills people who thought that they were doing something else. And it is shameful and scary that the root of the problem is the capitalist drive to make a buck facilitated by the technological wonders of the dark web and bitcoin. I had no idea how big a business it has become for Chinese labs that make fentanyl and its precursors for export to the United States (or for export to Mexico and re-export to the United States). It's China's revenge for what the British did to them with opium back in the 1800s. So this book had some useful new information for me. And I thought that Mr. Westhoff had a generally sane perspective on how to deal with the drug problem in the United States, which is by education, drug testing and managing drug users to be safe and giving up on the old, failed idea of the war on drugs.
But the book is overly long and written in a pedestrian style. It was a slog. A hundred fewer pages and a little spark in the mode of expression would have gone a long way to make the book a better experience....more
