My grandfather told me it wasn't always there. There was a village instead. And then one day a guy who was traveling in some other country came home. The village was gone, and that mountain was there.

...If you have faith... you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.
― Matthew 17:20[1]

Overview

Methuselah (メトシェラ Metoshera), also dubbed Titanus Methuselah, is a giant animal-plant-rock hybrid[3] Titan in the MonsterVerse created by Legendary Pictures who was introduced in the 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as a minor Titan that obeys Ghidorah and later Godzilla.

Name[]

"Methuselah" is a Biblical figure known for living a long time, a trait shared with almost all other uses of the word "Methuselah", including the oldest planet, the oldest star, and proteins that extend the lifespan of insects. This would suggest that Methuselah is ancient, even more so than the other Titans, but the significance of the name remains unknown.

Some Monarch agents gave Methuselah the nickname "Archie" for the time he spent living as an island in a remote Canadian archipelago.

Design[]

Appearance[]

Methuselah is a gigantic quadrupedal creature that is gray in coloration. Most notably, upon Methuselah's back sits a small jagged mountain, a result of his millennia-long hibernation. Plant life such as trees also grow on the Titan's back, forming a small forest. Methuselah has a large draconic skull with white eyes that have no pupils and a mouth with large, razor-sharp teeth. He also has large horns growing down from the top of his head that curl inwards. His forelimbs are clawed while his hind limbs are hoofed. He has a bulky armored body ending in a short reptilian tail.

Portrayal[]

It is believed that Methuselah is portrayed through CGI and keyframe animation, although the portrayal is currently undefined. Methuselah moves slowly and clumsily due to the great weight of his back.

Personality[]

Methuselah's dossier reveals that, naturally, he is propelled to protect nature by using his body as a "shield and sanctuary" from environmental disasters. However, like all Titans, he can be swayed by an alpha to be malicious and destructive.

Origins[]

Methuselah is a biblical patriarch from the Book of Genesis and is part of the genealogy linking Adam to Noah. Said to have died at the age of 969, he lived the longest of all the figures mentioned in the Bible. His name has become synonymous with longevity. Some scholars believe that Methuselah serves the symbolic function of linking the Creation and the Flood/Apocalypse.

A Titan sentinel with the power to camouflage, Methuselah can remain hidden in plain sight, able to seamlessly blend into the horizon of any rocky environment as a mountain range, a glacier, even earning the nickname "Archie" among some in the Monarch ranks for its time spent as a derelict island in a remote Canadian archipelago. Disguised by forests of vegetation that have claimed its rocky exterior from centuries of dormancy, Methuselah uses its mountainous body as a shield and sanctuary to protect or relocate entire populations from environmental catastrophes and Titan attacks. While lacking offensive elemental powers, Methuselah is a lumbering tank, able to withstand a heavy barrage of attacks and becoming a granite battleship that bulldozes Titan opponents in combat. Methuselah is the sleeping giant more humans have unknowingly seen throughout history, as it waited patiently for the call to rise.

History[]

Middle Ages[]

Legend has it that Methuselah wrought havoc upon a Munich village, reducing it to ruins before serenely settling amidst the debris, where a flourishing forest took root upon his colossal form. Mistakenly perceived as a dormant mountain, Methuselah's true origins remained concealed until the diligent efforts of Monarch unveiled the astonishing reality.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]

MethuselahMunichGER

Under the influence of Ghidorah, Methuselah attacks Munich, Germany.

Held in Monarch Outpost 67, located in Munich, Germany, the Titan is designated as "Titanus Methuselah" and several x-rays are taken of him, one of which is briefly examined by Mark Russell as Methuselah's file is browsed. Later, Methuselah wakes from his slumber due to the call of the new alpha, Ghidorah. Following his new alpha's orders, Methuselah proceeds to hunt on Earth with his new pack, beginning by attacking a nearby railway in Munich.

Godzilla, Barb, Methuselah

Methuselah shows up in Boston.

When Madison Russell activates the ORCA in Boston, Methuselah is one of the Titans to make the journey, despite being overseas. Either swimming or traveling through a Hollow Earth passageway, Methuselah does not move quickly enough to get to Boston before Godzilla kills Ghidorah. Methuselah then follows Rodan, Scylla, Behemoth, and the Queen MUTO in bowing down to Godzilla, acknowledging him as the rightful alpha.

Godzilla Dominion[]

Though he doesn't appear in the graphic novel, Methuselah instead appears in a red-tinted collage of monsters in the start of the graphic novel. It also said that Methuselah, alongside other Titans, are sent into dormancy by Godzilla.

Godzilla vs. Kong[]

Methuselah remains dormant during Godzilla's search for Ghidorah's remains that desecrated by Apex Cybernetics and fight against Kong and later, Mechagodzilla as per his alpha's instruction.

Abilities[]

Amphibious lifestyle[]

In his official dossier, Methuselah is revealed to have camouflaged himself as an island at one point by staying submerged for a certain amount of time. He can also camouflage as a glacier if in an arctic environment.

Bio-geological nature[]

Monarch describes Titanus Methuselah as "bio-geological", as he is able to effortlessly burrow underground.

Camouflage[]

Due to his back being composed partially of rock and vegetation, Methuselah can camouflage himself as a mountain, apparently very quickly.

Durability[]

Methuselah's back is extremely durable due to being almost completely covered in rock, allowing him to withstand powerful attacks.

Strength and combat[]

Unlike many Titans, Methuselah lacks any elemental powers, instead relying on his massive size and strength to "bulldoze" other Titans in battle. He can use his powerful jaws and massive horns to inflict a great deal of damage and destruction. He can also effortlessly carry an entire human population on his back.

Trivia[]

  • The outpost Methuselah was contained in, Monarch Outpost 67, is a possible reference to the 1967 Toho film Son of Godzilla.
  • Methuselah was created to show that Titans can be a part of the natural world.[4]
