Protagonizou numerosos filmes aclamados pola crítica e éxitos comerciais, incluíndo La strada, The Guns of Navarone, Zorba the Greek, Os canóns de San Sebastián, Lawrence de Arabia, The Shoes of the Fisherman, The Message, Lion of the Desert, O derradeiro grande heroe e A Walk in the Clouds. Gañou o Oscar ó mellor actor secundario dúas veces: por Viva Zapata! en 1952 e Lust for Life en 1956.
