“ | I must note that I am personally against entrusting someone as lacking in trackable history as yourself with such a task, but it is what the archbishop desires. | ” | — Seteth, to Byleth. |

Seteth (pronounced /'sɛtɛθ/[key]; Japanese: セテス Seteth) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a member of the Church of Seiros and the personal aide of Archbishop Rhea. His true identity is Saint Cichol (pronounced /ˈkihoʊl/[key]; Japanese: キッホル Cichol), a child of Sothis and father of Saint Cethleann.
Biography
Seteth, born Cichol, was one of the Children of the Goddess that lived in the ancient Fódlan. He met his wife in Enbarr, capital of the Adrestian Empire, with whom he had a daughter called Cethleann.[2][3] Some time afterwards, he joined forces with Seiros, who was the only survivor of Nemesis's attack on Zanado, became one of the legendary Four Saints along with his daughter and fellow Children of the Goddess Macuil and Indech, gifted his blood to Seiros's Adrestian allies, and aided Seiros in her quest to topple down Nemesis and avenge their fallen kin.[4]. During the battle with Nemesis in the War of Heroes, Cichol's wife fell during battle, and Cethleann was badly injured and fell into a coma for several centuries, leading Cichol to go into hiding to ensure Cethleann's protection.[5] Eventually, Cichol resurfaced in modern Fódlan in Imperial Year 1162, joining Garreg Mach Monastery and becoming an administrator for the Church of Seiros and the Church's second-in-command under the alias "Seteth",[6] serving directly under Rhea. In 1179, Cethleann woke from her coma and took up residence at the monastery under the alias "Flayn".[7]
Seteth spends the year of 1180 managing the Church and giving Byleth missions for each month. He initially distrusts Byleth due to their cryptic origins and sudden appointment to the post of teacher, but they earn his respect after saving Flayn from being kidnapped by the Death Knight. When Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg of the Adrestian Empire declares war on the Church, Seteth fights against Adrestia on its side.
On all routes other than Crimson Flower, Seteth returns to the monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth throughout the war with the Empire. On the Silver Snow route, Seteth becomes Byleth's second-in-command and helps handle logistical and grand-strategic concerns. On the Crimson Flower route, after the fall of the Leicester Alliance, Seteth leads Flayn, non-recruited Shamir and Alois, and the Knights of Seiros in a counterattack on Garreg Mach Monastery; he and Flayn can either be killed outright, or spared and driven back into hiding.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Seteth, despite being a relatively late recruitment joining in Chapter 12, is a solid unit with strong bases and a great base class in Wyvern Rider. Having flier mobility and stats to take on virtually any enemy at base is a boon virtually no other units have. On top of this, with a dedicated month of training in lances in Part II, Seteth can reach an A-rank by Chapter 14 and obtain Swift Strikes, one of the best combat arts in the game. At the cost of 4 weapon durability, Swift Strikes allows Seteth to attack twice consecutively with any lance, meaning he can essentially take out nearly any enemy in one round on the player phase, barring enemy monsters or enemy units with insanely high defense. Seteth's Major Crest of Cichol, while not useful for its occasional ability to nullify counterattacks when using combat arts since Swift Strikes usually kills anyway, allows him to use Lúin and the Lance of Ruin with Swift Strikes without the 10 HP penalty, granting him more certain kills by way of the Relics' higher might without the penalty of a riskier enemy phase. Seteth's one shortcoming is his late recruitment. Upon joining, Seteth faces competition from player units who have been trained, and thus had the benefit of tutoring and the ability to get class mastery skills, since Chapter 2. By Chapter 12, the player likely has several units with skills like Death Blow, Hit +20, and Reposition, none of which Seteth has at base. Moreover, the player also likely has flying units who have better stats than Seteth. Not to mention, Sylvain, another user of Swift Strikes, has much better availability in all routes, provided Byleth is female, and has a Crest that boosts his damage with Swift Strikes, making him simply better than Seteth. Nonetheless, Seteth is more than worthy of the fairly minimal investment to make him an excellent offensive powerhouse and will easily become one of the best units in Part II by virtue of Swift Strikes alone. This is especially true in Verdant Wind, where Seteth is the only Swift Strikes user who is recruited for free without needing to make Byleth female or train Byleth's weapon levels. Even on Silver Snow and Azure Moon, Seteth can still be deployed in addition to Ferdinand and Sylvain once he obtains Swift Strikes.
When it comes to class promotions, Seteth is best off focusing on maximizing his damage output with Swift Strikes which can be achieved via two paths. The most obvious path for Seteth to follow is from his base class of Wyvern Rider to Wyvern Lord. Out of all physically-oriented classes, Wyvern Lord is undoubtedly the best as it has amazing class modifiers, plus four to Speed and Strength, and amazing mobility, making it an obvious but effective class for Seteth to strive for. Seteth already possesses fairly high ranks in lances, axes, and flying so he should be able to make it to promotion within a few in game months should he receive a decent amount of attention during instruction sessions and be set on the Sky Watch group task. Another path to follow is to reclass Seteth to a Cavalier, a class he has unlocked at base, and train him to become a Paladin for inherent Lancefaire. Factoring in Lancefaire, Paladin essentially has a +7 modifier to Strength as compared to Wyvern Lord's general +4, meaning Paladin will always beat Wyvern Lord in raw damage output with lances. Moreover, Swift Strikes is such a great offensive option to the point that it renders Seteth's offensive options with axes moot, so exclusive focus on lances with Seteth is actually optimal. Class changing to Paladin also allows Seteth to equip ground battalions, which are more plentiful and generally better than flying ones, and guard adjutants for better odds of surviving enemy phases. Seteth does have an unfortunate weakness in Riding and starts at E-rank, but changing his only skill goal to Riding, setting him to stable duty, and training his Riding rank in instruction sessions should get him to a C+ within 4 months, which will allow him to attempt the certification with a high chance of passing. It is also recommended that Seteth obtain Death Blow by mastering Brigand, a feat he can accomplish in a few auxiliary battles should he be given the Knowledge Gem after the player spends renown at the Saint Cethleann Statue to get extra class experience.

Personality
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Seteth highly values order and discipline. Although he is wary of Rhea's decision to entrust Byleth with a position at the Officers Academy, he respects her judgement. As the aide of Archbishop Rhea of the Church of Seiros, he provides guidance and wisdom to the residents of Garreg Mach.
He dotes on Flayn, to the point of overprotectiveness. He strives to keep her away from things such as philanderers, harm, and Hanneman, who wishes to study her Crest. His relationship with Flayn is one of his most defining traits, often meddling in her affairs almost to an excessive degree in an attempt to keep her safe, to Flayn's dismay. He cares deeply for her, writing fables and books for her enjoyment.
He enjoys fishing as a pastime, a trait he picked up from his late wife, though as he admits in his supports with Leonie, he is not particularly skilled at the sport and simply enjoys the tranquility.
Seteth does not divulge his past easily, and shields himself with his stern demeanor and dutiful serving of the church prevents many from uncovering anything about his past. With that said, there are some things he doesn't mind sharing, such as being widowed.
In reality, Seteth is one of the four saints who fought alongside Seiros during the War of Heroes; his true identity is Saint Cichol, the father of Cethleann. Seteth is a seasoned veteran with much battlefield experience, having survived the War of Heroes. As Cichol, he is depicted wielding the Spear of Assal and the Ochain Shield, and during his time at the monastery he trained his own battalion, which is comprised of Garreg Mach's elite wyvern riders, hand picked by himself.

Endings
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose (single ending)
Seteth remained at the monastery and worked to restore the authority of the Church of Seiros. Doing away with his old strictness, he adopted a tolerant stance toward all. His encouragement of believers to respect those of other faiths helped the people of Fódlan to find common ground with others.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Seteth, Heir of Purpose (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
After ascending the throne as the first queen of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth appointed Seteth as her prime minister. As they set about the grand task of restoring Fódlan, the prime minister's strictness combined with the queen's magnanimity won the people over easily. Their personalities complemented one another perfectly in dealings with obstinate lords. When their long work was done, they finally announced their marriage, to the shock and delight of their subjects. The people considered themselves truly blessed to be governed by such a union.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop (Azure Moon)
Byleth took on the role of archbishop of the Church of Seiros, and Seteth continued in his position of adviser. As they set about the grand task of restoring Fódlan and the church, Seteth's strictness combined with the archbishop's magnanimity won the faithful over easily. Their personalities complemented one another perfectly in keeping church operations smooth. When Fódlan returned to stability, they finally announced their marriage, to the shock and delight of the people. The faithful considered themselves truly blessed to be guided by such a pair.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
After the war, Seteth remained at the monastery and dedicated himself to the restoration of the church. He was soon joined by Bernadetta, who abandoned her inheritance to House Varley and took up residence at Garreg Mach to commit to a life as a recluse. As the years wore on, Seteth wrote many fables, first in his spare time, and then later as his main preoccupation. His stories became famous among children throughout Fódlan. As he gained renown, many began to inquire about the wonderful illustrations that accompanied the writing. In response to these questions, Seteth was known to shrug and say, "Ask my wife...if you can find her."
Ingrid, Stalwart Knight & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop (Azure Moon only)
Ingrid declined to rule House Galatea, choosing instead to serve House Blaiddyd as a knight. As Faerghus worked with the Church of Seiros to advance policy, Ingrid served as an envoy between the two. In this capacity, she met routinely with Seteth, whose complete trust in Ingrid resulted in fruitful negotiations. Together, Faerghus and the church coordinated extensive relief efforts to return prosperity to Fódlan. After they had accomplished what they set out to do, it is said that Ingrid and Seteth settled down together in a small village, where they spent their days in peace, farming and fishing.
Hilda, Free Spirit & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
After the war, Seteth dedicated himself to the restoration of the church. He continued to write fables for children in his spare time, but became dissatisfied with the hobby due to a lack of quality illustrations for his work. When Hilda learned of this, she jumped at the chance to visit Garreg Mach and illustrate some of Seteth's newer stories for him. The completed fables were distributed far and wide, and the children who loved them eventually passed the famous and beloved works on to their own children and grandchildren.
Leonie, The Blade Breaker II & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
While Seteth remained at the monastery after the war to restore the Church of Seiros, Leonie wandered the land in pursuit of her dream to become an elite mercenary. It seemed as if their paths would never cross again. Years later, after they had achieved their goals, both retired and disappeared from the public eye at the same time, as if it had been prearranged. Though no official records of their lives after that time exist, it is rumored that a happy couple resembling them was sighted in a small mountain village. The couple was known for their excellent fishing skills, and for cooking up their bountiful catches for all the local villagers and travelers.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
While Flayn disappeared soon after the war, Seteth stayed at the monastery and worked to restore the authority of the Church of Seiros. Doing away with his old strictness, he adopted a tolerant stance toward all, and encouraged his followers to do the same. When he was satisfied that the message was received, he vanished from the monastery. Several centuries later, a man and a woman in ancient attire emerged to a Fódlan that had drastically changed. When she asked the man beside her if it would be all right in this new era to call him "Father," he said that perhaps it would be better to remain on the safe side.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose & Manuela, Divine Songstress
After the war, Seteth remained at the monastery to rebuild the church. Several years of hard restorative work later, he received a letter from Manuela. She wrote that she had traveled to a small, war-torn town and opened up a school for children. Reminded of the beauty and compassion in Manuela's heart, Seteth was moved to leave the monastery and join her there. As they worked together to manage the budding institution, the couple fell in love and eventually were married. It is said that their students were overjoyed.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
After the war, Seteth fully confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Intending to accompany Rhea to a life of seclusion, however, Catherine declined. Over the years, as Seteth worked to rebuild the church from the monastery, he continued to write love letters to Catherine. When the rebuilding effort was complete, he journeyed to the Red Canyon, where she and Rhea had been living, and delivered all of his letters by hand. Catherine was deeply moved, and with Rhea's blessing and no more reason to refuse him, she accepted his proposal. The two were wed and lived out their lives happily alongside Rhea.
Seteth, Heir of Purpose & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Seteth fully confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Refusing to remain at the monastery, however, Catherine declined. Over the years, as Seteth worked to rebuild the church, he continued to write love letters to Catherine. Her answer was always the same. Finally, when the rebuilding effort was complete, Seteth left the church and went to see her, declaring his love anew. With no more reason to refuse him, she at last accepted his proposal. The two were wed, and swore to walk side by side together through the new age.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth has an S-support with Rhea)
After the war, Rhea resumed her duties as the archbishop, and Seteth and Catherine joined her in rebuilding the Knights of Seiros. As ever, Seteth served as her second in command and Catherine remained one of her most trusted protectors. When the hard work was over and all had been restored, Seteth confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Though initially reluctant, Catherine is said to have been persuaded to accept by a nudge from Rhea herself. The two were wed in a packed and lively ceremony, and afterward they lived out their lives happily as husband and wife.
