Knight sword bearing divine inscriptions.

Description

The Ragnarok is a knight sword for Steiner in Final Fantasy IX, obtained through the Chocobo Hot and Cold after the player has a golden Choco. The Ragnarok has innate Slow status, which is inflicted upon susceptible enemies 30% of the time with Attack when Steiner equips Add Status. The Ragnarok teaches Shock and Thunder Slash, the former being his best Swd Art against single targets, and the latter being useless due to a bug.

Though the Ragnarok is the strongest knight sword Steiner can get without the Excalibur II, it is also the one the player can procure the earliest if they prioritize the chocobo sidequest. It can be considered one of his ultimate weapons.

The Ragnarok is one of the recurring classic endgame swords in the Final Fantasy series.

Obtain[]

ChocographLoc21

The Ragnarok is found in the Outer Island chocograph treasure, dug up from Chocobo's Air Garden. The player can advance the quest to the point Choco can fly after they have the Hilda Garde III, head to the Air Garden, and dig until they find the right chocograph. If obtained at the earliest, the Ragnarok is by far Steiner's strongest weapon.

Mechanics[]

The base damage dealt with normal attack is determined as follows everywhere but within Ipsen's Castle:

Base = 87 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = [(Strength + Spirit) / 2] + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
Damage = Base * Bonus

Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.

The damage is then modified by variables like Steiner's equipped killer abilities or MP Attack, his row position, and the enemy's Protect. If Steiner is under Mini, his Bonus will be 1.

When in Ipsen's Castle, the stronger weapons do less damage than weaker weapons, and the Base part of the damage formula with the Ragnarok is altered to the minimum possible damage.

The Ragnarok inflicts Slow onto susceptible targets at 30% chance with Add Status active, when Steiner uses Attack, Charge!, or Counter. It is one of the highest status-infliction percentages with Add Status.

Use[]

The Ragnarok can be considered Steiner's best knight sword in a playthrough where the player is not going for the Excalibur II, though his regular Excalibur can be made even stronger via Elem-Atk. The Ragnarok is the only source of Shock, his strongest Swd Art against single targets, allowing him to hit the damage cap most of the time. It is good against all the toughest enemies like Yans and bosses. The other ability it teaches, Thunder Slash, is pointless as it never hits.

When using the Ragnarok it is worth also equipping Add Status, as many enemies are susceptible to Slow.

All of Steiner's knight swords include his Spirit stat in damage calculation; the player can grind his Spirit stat by leveling him up with the Defender equipped.

Etymology[]

In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a prophesied event triggered by the death of the god Balder. It sees a great battle between all the major entities of Norse mythology, during which the spirits in Valhalla are called upon to join the fray. The encounter ends with the destruction of the universe, and Balder along with a handful of others are reborn as mortals, with few memories of the world before Ragnarök.
