Description
The Phoenix Pinion is an item used during battle in Final Fantasy IX that can also be equipped as an add-on for Eiko to learn the summon Phoenix. After Eiko has Phoenix, she has a random chance to auto-summon it when the player is about to get a Game Over; the chance of this happening is higher the more Phoenix Pinions the player has in the inventory. The player can also use a Phoenix Pinion during battle to revive a KO'd ally at minimal HP, or for damaging undead enemies. It cannot be used in the field like a Phoenix Down. It is made via synthesis at the end of the game and is also used in synthesis to make the Feather Boots.
Obtain[]
The only "shops" from where Phoenix Pinions can be procured are the Legendary Synthesis Shop in the final dungeon (the player will need 300 gil, a Phoenix Down, and a Gysahl Green to make one); Stiltzkin, who has it in his purchasable item packs in Cleyra, Fossil Roo, and Alexandria; and Mene's Chocobo Hot and Cold shop , where it costs 150 points.

Mechanics[]
The Phoenix Pinion is an item used in battle to either revive a KO'd ally for 1–10 HP, or to either reduce undead enemies to single-digit health (90% if the time) or to kill them outright (10% of the time).
Only Eiko can equip the Phoenix Pinion as an add-on; she can do this to master Phoenix, but it confers no stat boosts. Therefore, the player is best unequipping it after mastering Phoenix.
The final use of the Phoenix Pinion when the party is wiped out with Eiko in the party: there is a chance Phoenix is auto-summoned to prevent a Game Over. The chance of this happening is greater the more Phoenix Pinions the party has in their inventory.
The formula for the percentage chance is given by:
- Appearance Chance = (No. of Phoenix Pinion/256) * 100%
Since the maximum number of Phoenix Pinions one can keep in the inventory is 99, the maximum percent chance that Phoenix can appear using the above formula is:
- Appearance Chance = 99/256 * 100% = 38.671875% = 38.7%
Use[]
Phoenix is a good summon for Eiko to learn. Other than that, the player can use it as another revival item while in battle, equal to a Phoenix Down. However, it may be worthwhile to keep Phoenix Pinions in the inventory to boost the auto-summon chance.
Etymology[]
phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth. In the context of Final Fantasy IX, this refers to the eidolon Phoenix that Eiko learns from the pinion.
In Greek mythology, aPinions are the outermost primary flight feathers on a bird's wing.
