[edit]From Proto-Germanic *windaz, whence also Old Saxon and Old English wind, Old High German wint, Gothic 𐍅𐌹𐌽𐌳𐍃 (winds). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wéh₁n̥ts (“blowing”), present participle of *h₂weh₁- (“to blow”).
