[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *verecunnia, from Latin verēcundia, possibly influenced by cunnus (“vagina”). Doublet of verecondia, which was borrowed. Compare Galician vergoña ~ vergonza, but Portuguese and Occitan vergonha, Spanish vergüenza.
