Etymology

[edit]

From tide +‎ -al. For “tide,” Latin actually used aestus, which had a secondary signification of “heat.” British Medieval Latin had the rare tīda, from Old English tīd, but *tīdālis is unattested. The word for “tidal” in Latin was aestuālis, which would yield *estual in English (vide estuary).
