[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish تصفیه (taṣfiye, “a clearing, clarifying a liquid, a purifying from alloy or admixture, a cleaning or polishing, a making the heart or mind free from evil thoughts or intentions”),[1][2] from Arabic تَصْفِيَة (taṣfiya, “clarifying, purifying”), verbal noun of صَفَا (ṣafā, “to be pure, to be clear, to be pure of heart”).[3]
