- From Sanskrit माधुर्य (mādhurya, “sweetness”), from मधुर (madhura, “sweet”) + -य (-ya), according to Pardo de Tavera (1887). See also Malay madu.
- From Mexican Spanish *marjuya, according to Panganiban (1973).
