Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish كندر (kendir, hemp), from Proto-Turkic *kentir, *kendir (hemp).[1] Compare Hungarian kender, an Oghur Turkic loanword, Kazakh кендір (kendır). Possibly cognate with Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis).
