[edit]From Ottoman Turkish كندر (kendir, “hemp”), from Proto-Turkic *kentir, *kendir (“hemp”).[1] Compare Hungarian kender, an Oghur Turkic loanword, Kazakh кендір (kendır). Possibly cognate with Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis).
