[edit]Uncertain. Related to Norwegian keila (“channel”), Middle Low German kēl (“narrow bay”). Perhaps ultimately related to Proto-Indo-European *ǵeyH- (“to break open, germinate”). Also related to Icelandic kíll (“ditch, wedge”).[1][2]
