I went to the teacher and asked her, if Lee could continue in high school, you know, but "no", said the teacher, "it's not worth it, no matter how good she is, she cannot be anything when she's colored".

So that is why Mr. Whitney was so happy that Bob had gotten his solid business skills at a reputable college, and Pamela and Fred, still only in high school, were going to college too even if he would have to work his way through every used car throughout the U.S. to afford it.

As a 14-year-old, she herself fought against the racism that segregated black Americans from whites, when she and eight other African-American youth applied to a white high school in the city of Little Rock in Arkansas.
