From Middle High German erraten, from Old High German irrātan, arrātan, urrātan, from Proto-West Germanic *uʀrādan, from Proto-Germanic *uzrēdaną (to guess). Equivalent to er- +‎ raten (advise, recommend; guess). Cognate with English arread.
