Etymology

From Middle Dutch erdbēre, erdbēsie, from Old Dutch *erthberi, from Proto-West Germanic *erþubaʀi, from Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją (literally earth-berry). The latter part of the compound was replaced in modern Dutch with bei, from Middle Dutch baye, from Old French baie, from Latin bacca.
