Borrowed from Latin pollen. Common since the 18th century, occasionally already Middle High German bolle, Old High German polla.

  • The singular is used chiefly in biological terminology. In common usage, the word is a plurale tantum, and a new singular die Polle (a single grain or lump of pollen) may occasionally be backformed from it.
