Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]- (Overijssel) First attested as herdenborg in 1229-1230. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch herde (“hard”) and berg (“hill, elevated place”). An alternative hypothesis interprets the name as a compound of herde (“fortified, strong”) and burch (“fortified settlement, castle”). Compare Montfort, Montfoort, Sterkenburg and Stoutenburg. See also Dutch Low Saxon Hadnbarreg, 'n Arnbarg.
- (Groningen) (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
