Getting this Wikipedia thing right...

[edit]

Hey Maryam. You've had many early edits reverted and that can be annoying, so let me try and help out. First things first, take a wander around the 'Teahouse', WP:TEAHOUSE, an area designed to give new editors a friendly and supportive environment.

One of the most basic things about Wikipedia is that you are adding facts based on existing sources - you can't add things you experience, believe or know - that's called Original Research or WP:OR and is strongly discouraged - you need to find reliable sources, published newspaper or magazine articles, books or academic reference works that you can use to add sourced fact to the encyclopedia - each one of those facts needs to be 'Cited', that is have a verifiable source for the fact you have added. You can't just add stuff you know, because that's as bad as just making it up.

Also bear in mind the tone of your additions should be neutral - promotional language is a very strong nono on Wikipedia. Don't be discouraged, but do please take the chance to feel your way around over at the Teahouse and do a bit of learning and familiarising before you carry on editing. Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 14:45, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An additional thought for you - please do take a look at WP:RS - reliable sources are what make Wikipedia, but you've cited material to very unreliable sources - blogs, company websites etc. Do bear in mind that your ideal sources are newspapers, books, journals - not platforms with no editorial oversight. So, for instance, on Dubai Metro, while the unexceptional fact that the viaducts use a U shaped technique could reasonably be sourced to the company Systra's website, the claims that this "allows for a light aesthetic insertion in the landscape as well as savings in material consumption during construction." are promotional in nature. The breathless prose about Dubai Gold Souk from cuddlynest.com is similarly promotional and sourced to an unreliable source, so is going to get reverted. Maybe have a look back over those edits with a) reliable sources and b) neutral, encyclopedic language in mind? Glad to have an Emirati editor on board, by the way!!! :) Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 04:52, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for explaining in details. I was not aware about it. Your support matters a lot.Tank you once again. Maryam1984 (talk) 07:52, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article tone

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Belbury. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to Al Ain Zoo seemed less than neutral and has been removed. If you think this was a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Your statement that it is "the largest zoo of its type in the Middle East" was also unsourced, and unspecific (of what type?) Belbury (talk) 17:15, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.Thanks for letting me know.I think its a mistake from my side and my apologize. Maryam1984 (talk) 18:41, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your writing that a Dubai development has stunning views of the marina and is offering beautiful views and access to the excellent amenities available is an inappropriately WP:PROMOTIONAL tone, whether or not those words appear on the property website that you're citing as a source.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tourism or real estate brochure. Articles must be written in a formal and neutral tone. Belbury (talk) 18:22, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Control copyright icon Hello Maryam1984! Your additions to Dubai World Trade Centre have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. Do NOT get disheartened, it's all part of settling in - but copyright is a big deal for Wikipedia and even a few words 'lifted' from an article will trigger filters that are looking out for copyright violations. It's important to remember that it's the fact that's important, so when you're adding the weight of a buffalo, you need to put it in your own words. You can quote sources, for instance, you could say 'according to author Biff Boffington, "the weight of a buffalow doesn't matter as much as its height"' and that's what they call 'fair use'. There's nothing to stop you going back to that Dubai World Trade Centre article and adding the material you added, just in your own words rather than quoting the source directly. Hope this helps! Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 06:22, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for letting me know. As I am a new editor was not aware about such thing. I make sure will not repeat it again. Maryam1984 (talk) 07:25, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem icon Your edit to Zabeel Park has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. This edit to Dubai Mall is also an inappropriately WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE of the cited source. Comparing the news source (left) to your text (right):

Following the success of its first open-air experience at The Dubai Mall Zabeel, Reel Cinemas is opening a screen at Dubai Hills Estate from 8pm on Thursday, June 25. Dubai Hills is a master-planned development in Mohammad bin Rashid City situated between Al Khail Road and Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.
+
the success of first open-air experience at The Dubai Mall Zabeel, Reel Cinemas is opening a screen at Dubai Hills Estate is a master-planned development in Mohammad bin Rashid City situated between Al Khail Road and Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.

You must write content in your own words rather than directly copying the text of a news story and trimming out a few connecting phrases.--Belbury (talk) 13:14, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Again it is inappropriate to WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE news sources, as you did here at Al Jaddaf, if you're just dropping adjectives like "breathtaking" while keeping "beautiful". If you continue to ignore this issue your account may be blocked. --Belbury (talk) 11:45, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maryam, think about it in terms of facts. If the article says Shees is a lovely place with 456 statues, then rewrite the fact you've got from the source: "456 statues are arrayed along the main street of Shees" and cite the article. You need to get to the facts and get away from the words, because someone else owns them there words! Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 16:07, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm JohnFromPinckney. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Dubai Marina have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Text like The zipline spans 1 km in length and reaches heights of up to 170 meters, with riders soaring through the air at an average speed of 80 km/h. What makes the zipline even more exciting is that it features two parallel ziplines, allowing you to share this unforgettable adventure. is in no way appropriate for an encyclopedia, even if we got rid of the second-person "you". Please keep your edits within the boundaries of a informational resource rather than that of a sales broschure. — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 20:53, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have simply rolled back a slew of your edits: after going through a dozen or more and reverting them individually, I found that all of them were written in a non-neutral way, many blatantly promotionally, and that the sources were mostly commercial links, including Propsearch.ae. The one edit about the dolphin controversy may have been positive, and you can restore that if you like. Drmies (talk) 20:59, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Yes, after a cold review of my few edits, I do acknowledge that some of the wordings I had put do tantamount to promotional in nature. Its an oversight and I apologize for that. I hereby confirm that I am neither a paid agent or representing any brand. I am here to contribute to the Wikipedia community through presentation of correct facts and that too the facts taken from genuine and reliable sources.

I am requesting to kindly consider this as a formal request and kindly unblock my account please. I assure that I will use the reliable, genuine and well-known research and sources to present the facts. Its a learning phase for me on Wikipedia and definitely will work on the mistake I have done. Maryam1984 (talk) 20:24, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I'm not sure if you are a paid editor, but I can see why someone would think so. Virtually all of your edits are promotional. Perhaps you work in marketing or public relations? If so, you may be too much of a marketer to edit as Wikipedia requires, with a neutral point of view that does not talk up a subject. There's nothing wrong with that, it just means that you have a different skill set than is needed here. If you wish to continue to participate here, you will need to convince us that you can change your writing style to match Wikipedia guidelines, and- if you are a marketer- convince us that you aren't editing about clients. 331dot (talk) 09:30, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Advice

[edit]

(Non-administrator comment) Hi! Regarding your block, the issue isn't only about knowing if a specific site is promotional, but also about the tone of writing in general. A handy tip I like to give is: write so that both an employee of the company and an employee of its competitor will find it to be fair and neutral. More concretely, that means avoiding anything that might appear subjective, and, at first, limiting yourself to describing topics in a factual way.

Of course, the encyclopedia isn't just made of raw facts, and analysis is also important, but it should reflect the analysis made by existing independent sources (ideally, attributing them). If you're sure that a source commenting about the topic is independent (not simply repeating a press release or promotional material) and reliable, you can try to mention what they say about the subject, while attributing the comments to them rather than writing them in your (the encyclopedia's) own voice.

Taking one of your edits as an example to show how the promotional wording can be fixed:

Each Dubai Tram consists of five carriages and has the capacity to carry up to 405 passengers. Currently, there are 11 trams in operation providing a reliable and efficient mode of transportation for residents and visitors in key areas like Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), and Al Sufouh.

Here, you start with factual comments about the tram structure and capacity, and this is good. However, describing the tram-based transportation as "reliable and efficient", or describing areas as "key areas" is subjective, and isn't needed. The "residents and visitors" part is a bit redundant, as it includes everyone who might be present there. Here is how I would reword the edit:

Each Dubai Tram consists of five carriages and has the capacity to carry up to 405 passengers. Currently, there are 11 trams in operation in areas like Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), and Al Sufouh.

The factual information stays, while the tone is already a lot more neutral and objective. However, the other key thing to consider is the context. This addition would have been perfectly warranted in an article about Dubai's transportation infrastructure, but the article on which you made that edit, Dubai Marina, already talks about a specific district (and, in that context, about the specific tramway line operating in that district). You can see the "See also" on top of that section: it points to the more relevant article Dubai Tram, as talking about all of Dubai's tramways isn't relevant to this specific article.
