Let's see how it goes. Technblade has a draft, but due to the lack of sources, he wasn't notable. Btspurplegalaxy ๐Ÿ—ฉ ๐Ÿ–‰ 04:33, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Dude what the fuck. He has over 10 million subscribers. Just because he wasnโ€™t put in some fancy scientific journals or any of that shit doesnโ€™t mean he isnโ€™t notable. God your notability requirements suck. Heโ€™s way more well know than probably 90% of the โ€œnotableโ€ people you guys write articles about. Donโ€™t take his article down, especially now right after he died. So insensitive. Cboi Sandlin (talk) 04:40, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Watch your tone. I simply explained he wasn't notable. Wikipedia has guidelines that are in place for a reason. If the community agrees to the deletion, then it will be a draft. You are an editor on here, so you should be familiar with how things work. You and other any editors can improve on the draft, then he can have his own article. It's not that hard to provided sources. Btspurplegalaxy ๐Ÿ—ฉ ๐Ÿ–‰ 05:02, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
If we added every YouTuber that had little to no coverage in reliable outlets just solely on their subscriber count, there would be a plethora of poorly verified articles that don't explain in detail why they're important for readers to learn about. As much as I detest how stringent the notability guidelines can be, at the end of the day you have to look outside your perspective. Besides the fans of a subject, most readers not well-versed in internet culture would be confused about what makes them worth remembering without any reliable sources, and would dismiss it as trivial information. That's why this site has these requirements in the first place, so even people biased against internet personalities would understand their notability.
But anyways, I think it should be fine now. Multiple sources do exist for him that prove he's notable, enough to probably survive an AfD (although probably not without an extremely lengthy debate). PantheonRadiance (talk) 05:51, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@PantheonRadiance: Because multiple sources exist now to prove notability, that is the reason I created this page again to begin with. Along with the 12 references posted in this talk page (thank you and Link20XX by the way ๐Ÿ™‚), the fact that multiple news outlets have now made articles discussing him, I felt that it would be best to remake this page. I do not have a doubt anymore that there will be a lack of citations of information for this article, as Technoblade had been involved in many notable groups and events. That being said, I absolutely hear what you and Btspurplegalaxy are saying. In no way did I mean to push the boundaries of what qualifies as a notable article, and I am really sorry if I came off that way. Thank you for your comments and feedback, I really am grateful, as I'm still learning new stuff everyday. Thank you taking care of Wikipedia, and helping it to be the best website it can be. Cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 06:08, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Johnson524: Oh no worries, I understand. Part of Wikipedia at times is going bold in order to create the change you want to see on the site. Personally I'm an inclusionist so as long as someone or something has enough sources covering them, I'm perfectly fine allowing them as articles. I would've even been okay if you only used two sources that covered Techno in detail. PantheonRadiance (talk) 06:38, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@PantheonRadiance: I really appreciate it man! Thank you for understanding and for replying. Johnson524 (talk) 06:41, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Yeah I realize the draft is bad but there is probably something worth using though. Link20XX (talk) 04:26, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
This article honestly should've gone through AfC first, but there are several WP:SIGCOV articles about him. I'm posting several sources here from the draft and on Google News, then I'll de-PROD it Seems like someone already did. PantheonRadiance (talk) 04:42, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
For some refs now, I did find this, this, and this, which could be useful for expansion. He also had a voice-over role in the English dub of Tribe Nine (ref), so that could be worth noting too. Link20XX (talk) 04:52, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Request for full protection for forseeable future, 1 July 2022

Think at this stage it's only fair to close the page to all editing at this stage, as while trying to edit this, It's been vandalised with a massive picture of a penis (both in article and replacing the infobox picture), before that was swiftly replaced with a man bending over and gaping his asshole, with undoubtedly more beforehand. I'm not suggesting a full lockdown til the end of time, but just locking it so there will be absolutely no edits until, say, the end of the month, by which time the trolls who did this will have moved on. Is there any source that could confirm he passed away in late June instead of early June? Unspectrogram (talk) 14:30, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Some online sources, including an obituary (discussed above), indicate 10 June. No reliable sources provide an exact date, but it would be a mistake to presume that he died only a few days ago with evidence to the contrary. Occupation parameter

Quick thought here, I just was wondering if we should include "livestreamer" in the occupation parameter. I initially thought it was redundant as he only livestreams on YouTube, and that "YouTuber" would suffice along with his livestreams.

There are special cases to include a streaming occupation such as a "Twitch streamer" because it uses a different media or platform. I haven't looked at the provided sources too much, but it still feels a bit redundant to include it here. Sparkltalk 15:29, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Is including his real name really appropriate?

I feel like just having his first name there in the lead sort of breaks the flow? It's not like he was ever known mononymously by that, so it doesn't really work. Plus, he made pretty big efforts to straight up hide it in life (everyone thought his name was Dave, remember?) casualdejekyll 15:53, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Synth and birthdates

For the benefit of those involved with the current editorial disagreement on whether the birthdate field is WP:SYNTH and to end the potential edit war, I thought I would comment here as someone who helped clarify the WP:BLPPRIVACY section last year (started the RfC) and wrote the update to that section (following its conclusion). WP:DOB, WP:SPS, and WP:CALC apply here. This is an explicit carve out from WP:OR and therefore also an exception to WP:SYNTH. cc @Pbrks and Link20XX: TheSandDoctor Talk 15:42, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

@TheSandDoctor: Correct me if I am wrong, as I can't find it right now, but didn't that RfC come to the conclusion that it was unclear whether or not it was appropriate to stitch birth dates based on different sources. I question the reliability of the source that was most recently given, as well; moreover, reliable sources such as https://www.thewrap.com/technoblade-popular-minecraft-youtuber-dies-after-cancer-battle/ even do not give an exact DOB. Regardless, I'll leave it as is, as it would be an uphill battle. โ€“ Pbrks (t โ€ข c) 15:50, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Pbrks: The RfC came out of a situation where there were (well, still are) multiple years of birth in RS in conflict in another article and found that, when that situation exists, all dates/years with reliable sources should be included with the discrepancies noted.. It did not change or overrule WP:CALC. TheSandDoctor Talk 15:54, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
This discussion is moot anyway because the website states 1999-2022, thus clearly implying he was born in 1999. The tweet confirms he was born on June 1, so no calculations are even needed. Link20XX (talk) 15:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Link20XX: You are correct. My original comment was started before that change was noted and I believe was still valuable (achieved its purpose) as it corrected a policy misunderstanding per the below and serves as an educational tool for anyone else wondering who goes here/can be linked to if the issue crops back up for some reason. My only purpose in engaging in this thread was to help avoid an edit war/sanctions on others, educate, and come to a common understanding. TheSandDoctor Talk 16:06, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
I see, perhaps I am misremembering. Thanks for the clarification. โ€“ Pbrks (t โ€ข c) 15:58, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Pbrks: You are welcome! I am quite proud that I was able to help clarify that policy for that edge case should it come around again. The RfC is here. The closing comment does refer to WP:OR (reaffirming not to engage in it as that was a problem at that article), but it does not change that policy or its carve-out any. Kotaku death date

I recently found a Kotaku source that explicitly stated: "Technoblade (or Techno for short), a popular Minecraft YouTuber and internet personality with over 11 million followers on the video-creating platform, passed away on June 30 after losing his battle against cancer. He was just 23 years old."

I am very puzzled as to include the death date mentioned in this source. Sparkltalk 16:54, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

There was also another source from NBC New York stating: "Minecraft YouTuber, known to fans online as Technoblade, has passed away after battling cancer, his family confirmed June 30. He was 23." Again, I'm unsure if this is controversial to include this. Sparkltalk 17:09, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
  • @Sunshineisles2: Kotaku states that the death date is June 30th, NBC appears to potentially mean that. Stating that "no source is saying he died on June 30" is factually incorrect based on the (reliable) source(s) that you removed. --TheSandDoctor Talk 17:27, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
did not see the Kotaku article and should have checked it (I was admittedly editing faster than normal to try to avoid hitting an edit conflict), but I would contend against NBC "potentially meaning" June 30. the only invocation of that date is the sentence "Minecraft YouTuber, known to fans online as Technoblade, has passed away after battling cancer, his family confirmed June 30," which only indicates when the death was announced. deaths are often announced some time after they've happened, of course. my initial suspicion, not knowing an RS was claiming a death date of June 30, was not to assume it as my guess (read: not based on any concrete information) is that it's rather unlikely that an entire video featuring his family would be produced and uploaded within 24 hours of his death. Sunshineisles2 (talk) 17:34, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sunshineisles2: Please be careful with edits; conflicts are annoying but we need to be careful. I will give you that with NBC, but Kotaku is a reliable source (WP:VGRS) that explicitly stated it and we don't have any other reliable sources contradicting that date. The article can always be updated if that later turns out to be incorrect and other RS state something else consistently. Speculating that it is impractical would be, by definition, original research and contrary to an established RS story. Would you please reinstate the Kotaku source? TheSandDoctor Talk 17:59, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm not trying to be difficult here but looking through other discussion on this page, I'm not sure that adding an unadorned June 30 is the best course of action. Earlier discussions on this talk page seem to suggest that some sources were once reporting another death date but were later removed at the family's request. Now, obviously I can't source this but I think there is some disagreement over when he died. Again, I'm not trying to de-emphasize the significance of an RS claiming a date, but there seems to be evidence here that this is not the only date that is being or has been cited. I do agree, however, that we shouldn't operate under the claim that nobody is claiming a death date. I wonder if we could have some kind of temporary workaround pending more confirmation, like saying that Kotaku reports a June 30 DoD but other sources have apparently specifically declined to state one. --Sunshineisles2 (talk) 18:14, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sunshineisles2: I think a workaround could work (in a note or body), but the problem is that we don't have a source for the "specifically declined to state one" bit. TheSandDoctor Talk 18:33, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it is one of those things where we'd be trying to cite the absence of something, which by definition is not really viable. Perhaps a workaround that softens it even moreโ€”noting that his death was announced on June 30, one source says he died on that day (Kotaku), but other sources (like NBC, Variety, CNN, and the BBC) only report his death was announced on that date (actually, in the BBC's case, they seem to have sidestepped the question entirely for now). If the New York Times were to report on his death, there might be more clarity, as from my experience their obits usually make a point to mention any discrepancies out front, like saying "so-and-so's death was announced in a statement on [Date X], which did not say when they died." -- Sunshineisles2 (talk) 18:40, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sunshineisles2: That works for me. Do you think that that would be best in the note or body? TheSandDoctor Talk 18:47, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
I think editing the existing note would be the best course of action. When families have declined to announce death dates, usually the article body reads fine with just the announcement date clarified as such. There's no need to call overt attention to it outside of the occasional case where multiple sources report different death dates for somebody. Sunshineisles2 (talk) 18:50, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
    I've updated the note.--Sunshineisles2 (talk) 18:59, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sunshineisles2: Looks good! Glad we could come to a decent compromise and come together for the overall improvement of the article! TheSandDoctor Talk 23:12, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I think this was a good and fair way to handle updating the article. The New York Times has just run a piece quoting a rep from a company Technoblade worked with, saying that the info in the video is what the family is comfortable sharing for now, so I think this is the best way to leave that portion of the article. Sunshineisles2 (talk) 23:23, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Indeed. I know I am not alone in believing it is a shame that this article didn't exist when he was alive to see it. I understand why (sourcing must exist etc), but that doesn't mean it isn't a shame. Hope you keep well, @Sunshineisles2:! May our paths cross again (positively). Lead name

Should we really start the lead with 'Alexander'? I understand that that's policy, but the point stands that he's apparently better known as 'Dave' then 'Alexander'. His real name was revealed only recently and his full name isn't even known. I would like another opinion on this. Thanks, VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 06:51, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Dave isn't his real name. Dave was only used for a prank video back in 2016 mentioned in his latest video. I didn't say I was going to put 'Dave' into the lead; it was just to illustrate the relative obscurity of the name. VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 07:47, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
You could put also known as Dave or something related to that wording. Since it is mentioned in the personal life section. Btspurplegalaxy ๐Ÿ—ฉ ๐Ÿ–‰ 08:05, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Lead should not include 'Alexander' by its own. Unless his last/full name is published in a very reputable source, only include it in the infobox. SWinxy (talk) 07:06, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
That information will never be publicized due to his family wanting to keep it private. Btspurplegalaxy ๐Ÿ—ฉ ๐Ÿ–‰ 07:10, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

The video - the only source - gives his name as Alex. It's original research to extrapolate that it's short for Alexander, so if we're using his real name in the article it should be "Alex" not "Alexander". WaggersTALK 10:52, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

@Waggers: His website names him Alexander. VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 11:21, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Should probably be added as a ref footnote at the first mention of his name as I'm sure I won't be the only one that hadn't seen his website and wondered why we're using a different name to all the news articles about him. WaggersTALK 11:25, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Should we even put the name in at all? I think it might be a BLP thing here. casualdejekyll 15:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
I am honestly against the first name being included. It gives me weird vibes to have a first name without a last name. Regardless, the subsequent use is a violation of MOS:SURNAME (which I'm going to start a seperate thread about). โ€“MJLโ€‰โ€Talkโ€โ˜– 22:04, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Part of the Wikipedia:Good article criteria is stability in the article. Given his recent passing and the recent flurry of activity on the article it might be best to wait maybe a month and let this surge in activity and edit requests die down before nominating it as a GA. - Aoidh (talk) 08:52, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

@Johnson524 Bit too hasty there, mate. Give this discussion a bit more time first.
@MJL Perhaps I may have misinterpreted some of the provisions in WP:TWITTER/WP:ABOUTSELF. My intent was to provide a list of Technoblade's tweets that documented those achievements, and whittle it down (via discussion with others) to about one tweet per achievement as per:
  • the precedent of using one of his tweets as a source for Technoblade having ADHD
  • provision 5 of WP:TWITTER, so that the citations aren't overrun with Twitter links.
What do you think is the best move from here? Cheers, u|RayDeeUx (contribs | talk page) 16:35, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
@RayDeeUx, @MJL: I am currently editing the page and finding actual reliable news sources to cited, on top of the tweet already there. It is going to take some time, but I'm going to make this right. Thanks for the information. Johnson524 (talk) 16:38, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

The last sentence of the "Career" section states that Technoblade had reached 10.8 million subscribers by the time of his death, however, the source only says that's how many subscribers he had at the time of writing. This should be changed from 10.8 million to 10.4 million as according to Social Blade he had 10.5 million by the end of the day, and an archive shows he only had 10.4 million, minutes after the announcement's upload. 99.245.116.14 (talk) 02:44, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Partly done I've updated the wording to say around instead of by. The proposed edit seems too close to WP:OR for my preferences. Though, WP:CALC does give some leeway here, I'd rather just stick to what the secondary source says rather than find our own number through an alternative methodology. โ€“MJLโ€‰โ€Talkโ€โ˜– 05:17, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

The Pinknews source

I take a huge issue with the pinknews source attached to the sentence mentioning Technoblade's adhd, since it only briefly mentions it in passing in an article otherwise about a controversial tweet that isn't actually shown in the article and I was told was actually made by Dream instead of Technoblade. It absolutely needs to be replaced by a batter source. I don't care if it's also from pinknews, but it shouldn't be the one about overblown twitter drama. Unnamed anon (talk) 04:01, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Why is that a problem? The article is not being used to add the Twitter drama (because that would be undue weight), but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be used for other statements made in it. After all, PinkNews is considered a reliable source by WP:RSP. As it happens, that was the only reliable, secondary, and non-opinion source that I have found that backs up that claim. If you have a better source that meets all of those criteria, then you are welcome to post it. But unless you have one (and even if you do), I don't see any problems keeping the current citation, as it meets all the standards it needs to meet to be used. Link20XX (talk) 04:09, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
I should add that the sources you're adding to replace them are worse than what you're trying to replace. If your concern is that it only mentions ADHD in passing, why are you trying to replace it with sources that also only mention it in passing? - Aoidh (talk) 04:20, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
The problem is that the mention of adhd is so brief in the pinknews article compared to the rest of the article, which is otherwise so full of undue weight about twitter drama and doesn't even show the controversial tweet it was talking about that it damages the reliability of the actual article (keyword article, not site. I already knew that pinknews is considered reliable and have no problem if a different article from pinknews mentions adhd and we use that instead). My main concern is less that it mentions adhd in passing and more the fact that the article is filled with too much twitter drama about a tweet that the article doesn't even show. I want to reiterate a third time: just because the article itself isn't an opinion piece and the site is otherwise reliable, doesn't mean it's filled with too much garbage that it's just more worth it to find a better source that actually talks about Technoblade instead of an angry mob tweeting about him over a tweet the article doesn't show. Unnamed anon (talk) 04:28, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
The article doesn't show the Tweet because it was deleted. Plus, it doesn't have to at all; just the fact that a reliable source is reporting it is enough for us to assume it is true. Link20XX (talk) 04:40, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
I realize the source is reliable, but it's also very wildly off-topic. It's about angry twitter mobs either defending or pointlessly attacking Technoblade, not Technoblade himself. I relaize the sources I was trying to replace it with weren't as consistently reliable, but they were actually about Technoblade instead of some twitter drama that lasted for a few days. It seriously irks me that some pointless twitter arguments on an article not even about Technoblade are now immortalized because it happened to mention that Technoblade has adhd. It would be like if the only secondary source for a movie director's birthday was for an article about a controversy surrounding a negative review of their otherwise positively received movie; it's so indirect and calls too much attention to such a pointless controversy that at that point a primary source is more fitting. I'm now heavily considering if reinstating Technoblade's tweets would be a better choice since according to WP:V, Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, usually in articles about themselves. However, I'm also wondering if the adhd mention should be removed because there's not meaningful secondary coverage, or if it should stay since his adhd is one of the few details of his personal life he was open about Unnamed anon (talk) 06:49, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
@Link20XX: To clarify: As I linked to Unnamed anon yesterday, the "was Hitler a lesbian?" tweet that caused the initial backlash against Technoblade is still up on Twitter [1]. It was never deleted. I'm not saying this should be covered in the article. Also, despite what Unnamed anon says, the backlash lasted longer than a "few days"โ€”at least, the negative opinion of him amongst those particular Dream SMP fans lasted until his death. Again, not saying these people and their perspective are worthwhile enough to cover or that we should even want to, but Technoblade was considered one of the more "controversial" personalities during his time on there because of it (and maybe a couple other things he apparently said on Discord that were screenshotted), despite being as PG as possible during his streams. Ss112 07:25, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
Link20XX, Aoidh, Ss112, I asked how to deal with this situation in the blp noticeboard since the only secondary source was super indirect, and was told by Zaereth that "If those are the best sources we got, then I would generally say remove it." I realize that Pinknews is a reliable source, but having a source about dumb twitter drama is undue weight regardless of the fact that we're not using any of the content about the twitter flame wars. There is also the fact that, as Zaereth puts it, "lot's of people say they have ADHD, but how many have been diagnosed as such?" Thirdly, is his adhd even notable enough given that it has such little secondary coverage, and did Technoblade himself bring it up often (genuine question, because I rarely watched his videos myself)? Fourth, regardless of the site being reliable, the actual article loses a lot of credibility if it claims that the tweet is deleted when it's clearly still up, as Ss112 linked.
