Swallowtail shape as characteristic of "burgee" as defined by Ohio Legislature

[edit]

The Ohio General Assembly long ago passed a law, still very much in effect, providing that "The flag of the state shall be burgee-shaped". Ohio Revised Code Section 5.01. The specific meaning of "burgee" in that statute is "swallowtail". I think Wikipedia should at a minimum offer a disambiguation page that points to a page that explains the Ohio-defined legal meaning of the word. Perhaps the deletion noted below on from 6 Jan 2014 makes a cross-reference (or disambiguation note) necessary. The meaning under Ohio law is not the meaning provided in this article as currently edited, which says that the word refers to a flag ("regardless of its shape") of a recreational boating association. Indeed, none of the examples of pennants and flags shown in this article is burgee-shaped in the Ohio sense. 160.253.0.120 (talk) 23:41, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the burden of your request to define "burgee-shaped in the Ohio sense" would fall to the Flag of Ohio article, not the Burgee article. You might want to bring up the issue at Talk:Flag of Ohio. —Diiscool (talk) 12:59, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Expand focus

[edit]

While I don't think there is a lot that can be said about burgees, I do believe the article's focus is too British. For example, what rules is the author citing when describing the appropriate spots on a boat to fly a burgee? I doubt these are universally accepted from country to country.184.145.60.244 (talk) 20:43, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the flag of Ohio linked in this article about burgees? And, although it's 2 years ago, to the person above me, yes rules and customs about flags on boats and ships are surprisingly international. Ian Splinter (talk) 15:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just deleted it. The Yeti 15:27, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The string of images down the right side of the page is ungainly; I am removing in favor of one single exemplar. Would prefer to use Royal Cork YC, but the image is broken. SixFourThree (talk) 12:56, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[1][reply]
