Fabulous Beasts (Chinese: 有兽焉; pinyin: Yǒu shòu yān; Literal translation: There Is a Beast) is a manhua produced by FENZ Studio(Chinese: 非人哉工作室) in China. The original copyright belongs to the author Xue Xia Mao Yao Zi (Chinese: 作者靴下猫腰子; pinyin: zuòzhě Xuēxià māo yāozi). There are currently 5 physical books on the market.[1]

Introduction

"Fabulous Beasts"《有兽焉》is a comic work by the author Xue Xia Mao Yao Zi (Chinese: 作者靴下猫腰子; pinyin: zuòzhě Xuēxià māo yāozi). Starting from October 15, 2017, it has been getting updated every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday on the official Weibo of "Fabulous Beasts" Comics, which is affiliated to FENZ Studio(非人哉工作室). The comic book was later published by the studio on December 1, 2018.[2]

The content of this comic mainly tells the story of the heavenly beasts going to live on earth. It is currently serialized in its official channel. The protagonists in the work are a group of "beasts" who descend to earth for various reasons. The characters in the work occasionally interact with Characters from "Fei Ren Zai"《非人哉》(Chinese: 非人哉).[3]

Tencent Animation has the contract rights for this work[4], but it has stopped serializing it at this stage. The comic also collaborated with Hokuto Penguin to produce a dynamic audio comic.[5]

On January 11, 2021, Fabulous Beasts Comics was launched on the Bilibili comics platform. It ranked fifth in the "Recent New Works" in the first quarter of 2021, with a quarterly collection of approximately 10,000.[6]

On April 14, 2023, An animated adaptaion of Fabulous Beasts was launched on the Bilibili platform.[7][8]Each episode lasts about 6–8 minutes and is updated every Friday at 10 am Beijing time.[9]

Characters

Tianlu & Bixie (Chinese: 天禄&辟邪) Tiān lù& Bìxié

Tianlu (Chinese: 天禄; pinyin: Tiān lù)

Nicknamed Pipi, one of the protagonists of You Beast Yan is a blue Pixiu. Currently staying at Sibuxiang's Deerman Store.

As the main character in the comic, his daily direction determines the direction of the main line of the comic.

Bixie (Chinese: 辟邪; pinyin: Bìxié)

Tianlu's brother, Bixie, is a red Pixiu. He lives in Tianlu's stomach.

Sibuxiang (Chinese: 四不像; pinyin: Sìbùxiàng)

The manager of the Deerman Store, an anthropomorphic deer-like character wearing a mysterious mask, temporarily raises Pipi. Originally an ordinary elk, he was later put on a mask made of Sibuxiang (四不相) [another character with the same name, not to be confused with this] bones by Heaven and became Sìbuxiang (四不像).

Tuye (Chinese: 兔爷; pinyin: Tù yé)

Also nicknamed Lord Rabbit, he is a retired rabbit from the Moon Palace who once lived in Beijing came to Yunnan to follow Sìbuxiang.

Jinjiao & Yinjiao (Chinese: 金角&银角; pinyin: Jīn jiǎo & Yín jiǎo)

Yinjiao (Chinese: 金角; pinyin: Jīn jiǎo)

Also named Silver Horn, he is the former alchemy boy of the Supreme Lord of Tiangong. Because he and his brother Yinjiao accidentally burned a pot of elixirs, they were punished, transformed into chinchillas and sent to the mortal world.

Jinjiao's younger brother. He lives with Jinjiao in Deerman Store.

Twenty taels & eight pounds(Chinese: 二两&八斤; pinyin: Èr liǎng& Bā jīn)

Two taels (Chinese: 二两; pinyin: Èr liǎng)

The illegitimate son of Ao Bing, the dragon son of the East China Sea, and Wa Mao, looks more like a dragon. Bajin's brother works as a courier at Deer Man Store, and his nickname is Totoro.

Eight pounds (Chinese: 八斤; pinyin: Bā jīn)

The illegitimate son of Ao Bing, the dragon son of the East China Sea, and Wa Mao, looks more like a cat. Erliang's younger brother and meow translator is nicknamed Mao Long.

Tubaoshu (Chinese: 吐宝鼠; pinyin: Tǔ bǎo shǔ)

Also named Jewel-spitting mongoose, anything she eats can be spitted out as Mani Orbs. She is willing to help others and presides over the Treasure-Tumbling God Cult.

Diting (Chinese: 谛听; pinyin: Dìtīng)

An underworld executive and a frequent visitor to the Deerman Store, he can tell the real from the fake and has the ability to read minds.

Kulou (Chinese: 骷髅猫; pinyin: Kūlóu māo)

Nicknamed Little Skull, he was accidentally discovered by Di Ting under the Naihe Bridge and brought home, and was resurrected by accident. He was tortured to death and had a deep hatred for human beings.

Taotie (Chinese: 饕餮; pinyin: Tāotiè) "My real name is Taotao, but unfortunately no one has ever called me Taotao". Because Taotie was too greedy, he ate all his parts except his head. He had a pair of wings but could not fly.

Fighting tiger(Chinese: 战虎; pinyin: Zhàn hǔ) The ancient Chi You's mount (one of the mounts) turned into a stone statue because it protected Chi You's sword. It was discovered by Sìbùxiàng and his party, and signed a contract with Sìbùxiàng not to harm anyone, and temporarily stayed in Deer Man Store.

Four dissimilarities(Chinese: 四不相; pinyin: Sì bù xiāng) One of Jiang Ziya's mount, in ancient times, the two brothers of Pixiu met and were later killed by the evil spirits.

Animation

On November 20, 2021, the official Weibo of Fabulous Beast Comics reprinted the Weibo of Bilibili Guo Chuang(Chinese: 哔哩哔哩国创) . The content included the official animated PV, indicating that Fabulous Beast officials were planning the animation of the comic. Its official Weibo also released its own promotional video shortly after.

Currently, the animated version of Fabulous Beast is being broadcast on Bilibili since April 14, 2023.[10]

Songs

On April 14, 2023, Fabulous Beast Animation officially released the MV for the song "Fabulous Beast" on Bilibili, and also put the song "Fabulous Beast" on mainstream music platforms. This song is the theme song of the animation "Fabulous Beast", written by Xu Bo, composed by Kota Ohuchi, and sung by Luo Tianyi.[11][12]

Merchandise

The Fabulous Beasts' titular characters have been used as the central theme in an assortment of products such as plushies, keychains, postcards, shoulder bags and blind boxes to name a few.[13]
