Recat
[edit]I would like to see a recategorization of some of these articles into new subcategories. One I'd particularly like to see would be Category:Jewish marital law to include topics of marriage, niddah, tzniut and halakhic sex-crimes. An alternate name might be Category:Jewish family law, parallelling Category:Islamic family law.
Other possibilities include Category:Jewish sacrificial laws for articles involving Temple service, etc; Category:Jewish civil law for articles about courts, etc.
Although this category is not exceptionally large, it contains a mish-mash of all of these topics, which would be easier to navigate with the aforementioned subcats. I know that this talk page might not be well-frequented, but I still wanted to invite any comments before going ahead with this. --Eliyak T·C 20:02, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Note: I have created Category:Jewish marital law. --Eliyak T·C 22:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Update
[edit]For those interested, although it wasn't part of any grand plan, several subcategories now parallel the Orders of the Mishnah:
- Moed: Category:Jewish holy days (also Category:Hebrew calendar)
- Nashim: Category:Jewish marital law
- Nezikin: Category:Jewish courts and civil law
- Kodashim: Category:Jewish sacrificial law (also Category:Tabernacle and Jerusalem Temples)
- Taharot: Category:Jewish purity law

Jewish law and rituals
[edit]What is a ritual, in the title. Are their any objection to renaming simply to Jewish Law? Jon513 15:30, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Category:Jewish theology has been removed twice and revert one. I think it should be talked about here before being put back. personally I think that the category does not fit. Just as halacha is not in the category Jewish theology, a category that is about halacha should not be either. Also both this category and Category:Jewish theology are in Category:Judaism, if you want put "Jewish laws an rituals" under "Jewish theology" it should be removed from Category:Judaism, which wouldn't make sense since they are different topics in Judaism (no one would expect halachic topics to be hidden in Jewish Theology). - Hi Jon, glad you're still thinking about all this. I much prefer Jewish "thought" or "beliefs" or both, since "theology" comes primarily out of Christian discourse and is not used as a term throughout Judaism or Jewish studies. I would still split "Jewish law" from another category (e.g., Jewish ritual, or practice or custom). Many articles would fit primarily under one of these headings, though some would benefit from multiple tagging. (Also, for non-ritual law, we may want a "Mishpat Ivri" type category, but there isn't a perfect English translation.) HG | Talk 16:34, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- I am not quite sure what you are say. Do you think that this category should not be listed under Category:Jewish theology? Jon513 17:06, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- "Jewish law" (w or w/o ritual) should not be listed under theology. I don't know any religious law that's classified (in the world) as a form of theology. Certainly, halakhah or mishpat ivri are not classified even under Jewish thought (makhshevet Yisrael). HG | Talk 20:19, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
