• The Iraq situation is, of course, of great interest, and what Abbott has to say about it is of much interest. However, in order to cover it one has to be clear and precise, and it's probably wise to write in a way that's somewhat robust against further developments (a tactic mentioned for breaking stories in WN:Newsworthiness).
• The headline is misleading in a sensationalist way; from the sources, he hinted, he said he might consider, he did not rule out, which falls far short of 'offering military assistance in Iraq'.
• The first sentence of the lede doesn't describe something than happened at all; it only says that something didn't happen. The second sentence of the lede talks about a "pledge", but no pledge has been described. There is also no answer to basic question when in the lede; and while a reviewer may somethings fix an otherwise okay lede by smoothly inserting a "day" word, ("yesterday", "on Friday", etc.), in this case the lede already has this focus problem I found too fundamental to "just fix".
• In fact, Obama has now ruled out at least one option. That doesn't necessarily preclude reporting on what Abbott said before Obama said that, but the way one reports it should be modulated.
