MancFurs is a local furry community for the Greater Manchester region in the United Kingdom.

Meets[edit]

MancFurs meets are held every second Saturday at The Church. The meets start at 12pm (noon) and finish at 5pm. All attendees must be 18 years or older.

The venue is easily accessible via all modes of public transport, with car parks available nearby if coming from afar. The inside of the venue is mostly flat, with ramps leading to main areas (including the Fursuit Lounge).

There is a dedicated changing space at the back of the venue for fursuiters. Entry to the Fursuit Lounge requires checking bags in with MancFurs Staff. Fursuiters are marked with wristbands for ease of access.

There used to be a pre-meet available for those arriving at Manchester Piccadilly Station, where attendees would meet up half an hour before the meet and all walk together to the venue. However, this was phased out just before the COVID-19 pandemic due to the rising popularity of the meet.

There is a Code of Conduct publicly available to view online. This must be followed by those attending the meet in person, as well as those attending any of MancFurs official online social spaces.

Attendance[edit]

MancFurs generally receives approximately 200 attendees per meet, with approximately 50-60 of those members bringing their fursuits.

Venue[edit]

The current meets are held at The Church on Chorlton Street, at the centre of Manchester's Gay Village. Sometimes, the meets are temporarily moved to Bar Pop - the sister venue to The Church.

Staff and Volunteers[edit]

MancFurs has 4 dedicated members of staff who look after the meets. There are also several extra volunteers who help out on the day of the meets.

As of 2023, MancFurs is an organization; bound by a constitution, composed of a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Welfare

Socials and Telegram[edit]

MancFurs is available on all social media platforms including Discord and Telegram[1], where members can join and socialise with other attendees. An announcements channel is also available on Telegram for those to receive the latest information on the day of the meets.[2]

History[edit]

MancFurs formed from the Manchester Meets, first happening August 26th 2000 [1], that became part of the regular NorthernFurs (UK) meet rotation in the early 2000s[2], with Manchester's rotation for the meets originally happening on the last weekend of May and November yearly, and the monthly mini-meets held on the second Saturday of the month which was first recorded on the NorthernFurs website in 2006[3].

Originally the meets took place on both Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday being a quieter event which was usually hosted at cafes, however the second day was eventually dropped as attendance dropped compared to the busier Saturday with the last arranged mini-meet on a Sunday happening on the 13th of March, 2011.

The name "MancFurs" was first officially used in March 2012 when the mini-meet organiser at the time DarkOverord and former mini-meet organiser Stuart Otterson set up the Manchester Furs Twitter account, though originally intending to just use the name "Manchester Furs", the shortened name originally used for a small handle became the defacto name not long afterwards.

Early 2013 "mini" had been dropped from the title for MancFurs meets, and the main meets had been renamed to "The Great Northern Furmeet" which changed the May meet to June to avoid further clashes with Confuzzled.

With Lone-the-Dog stepping down as Meet organiser in December 2013[4], the top-down structure of "organiser" with volunteers under them was changed and a MancFurs committee was organised and took over running the events starting in 2014 before settling in to the organisational structure used currently.

By 2015 the two meets had ceased running as separate entities and both were under MancFurs, with the Great Northern Furmeets becoming seasonal meets called the MancFurs Summer/Winter Party.

The meets were then put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, and returned without the extra two party meets in June and November, leaving only the 12 monthly meets.
