Finnish
editPronunciation
editEtymology 1
editFrom Proto-Finnic *lakci (compare Karelian laksi, Veps laht, Estonian laht, Votic lahti, Northern Sami luokta), borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Lithuanian lanktis (“arc”)).[1] -ht- in the nominative is by analogy with the oblique case forms; the expected form laksi (compare the declension of kaksi) has fallen out of usage in the standard language, but survives in Swedish-language toponyms in Finland (as -lax) and some dialects, primarily some Karelian dialects.
