Probably from en- (in) +‎ a descendant of Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (to heed, keep).[1] Compare Old Norse geyma (keep, watch), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaumjan, watch).
