Ultimately from Arabic عَاشِق (ʕāšiq). The forms ashugh, ashough are borrowed from Armenian աշուղ (ašuġ).

ashugh (plural ashughs)

1. A mystic bard, balladeer, or troubadour in the South Caucasus, Iran or Turkey who accompanied their songs with a long-necked lute (saz).
