Wikipedia:WikiProject Nigeria/Coordinators

Contents

The project coordinators are regular editors appointed by members of Wikiproject Nigeria to organize, manage and harmonize online content relevant to this project. However, they have no special prerogative over article content or editors' conduct, and decisions taken collectively here are generally unenforceable and non-binding.

History

The idea of having coordinators' for the Wikiproject was the brainchild of User:Mahveotm, who came up with the idea as a way of increasing project engagement on this page. The suggestion was seconded by the active members of the Wikiproject.

Structure and duties

The project coordinators are appointed (by approval vote) on a 12-month tenure to engage the Nigerian community on Wikipedia by initiating activities that will promote the quality of Nigerian content on Wikipedia. They are also responsible for the maintenance and smooth running of activities that concerns this WikiProject, and liaise with other relevant WikiProjects to improve Wikipedia content.

I look forward to serving my country on Wikipedia, (i.e. WikiProject Nigeria) in the next one year, either as coordinator or assistant coordinator. HandsomeBoy (talk) 12:58, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If I'm voted as the coordinastor of this Wikiproject, I intend to engage our members on a 3-point agenda that will further the progress of articles attached to this project. My focus will be on editors' retainment, wikification of university and sports articles and to move some of our articles to "good article" status.

I still remember when I joined Wikipedia, it was my interests that brought me here. Likewise, many new editors will join because of that reason. It is impractical to think that a new editor will want to edit an encyclopedia on topics that doesn't concern him, this is why I believe that the way we treat naive COI editors goes a long way to determine if we will have an increase in the number of Wikipedians dedicated to this Wikiproject. I will imploy strategic methods in inculcating WP:COI and other relevant policies to their understanding, that will ensure that this environment will be comfortable and welcoming for good faith COI editors. I believe the best way of ensuring editor retainment is through encouraging individuals that have a bit of interest in the project, whether legitimate or illegitimate. With time, it will only get better, but the initial "little bit of interest" is quite important. this is key in reducing the knowledge gap and so called "westernization" of Wikipedia content. I believe with more experienced Nigerian editors, it will be a win-win situation for us all.

Out of the 100+ universities we have in Nigeria, more than 50% is a mess (for example this). I'm not talking sourcing, I am talking structural concerns, and not following the formatting standard for universities on Wikipedia. Then for sports, we have one of the biggest beach soccer tournaments happening in Lagos annually for some years now, I will collaborate with my fellow Wikiproject colleagues to ensure its representation on Wikipedia. Our Super Falcons do us proud regularly, women WAFU cup will be on soon, female league will start in march. I will also collaborate with my fellow members to make them well represented. Nigerian local leagues are growing, we will work to improve them.

PResently, we have only ten good articles, which is pretty low for how diverse the Wikiproject is; I will collaborate and encourage editors to move more of our articles to GA status within 12 months.

Over the next 12 months, with the help of my enviable Wikiproject members, and the amount of hardwork, responsibility and dedication usually associated with anyone with links to Nigeria, we will look back and marvel at what we have achieved. I can't do this alone, but with your help I'm sure it is achievable. Vote for me, and let's make it happen! HandsomeBoy (talk) 00:01, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have been editing for quite a while now and fully assisting in organizing WikiProject Akwa Ibom which was also abandoned. Apart from that i have also been a strong advocate of the WP Nigeria, including helping with AFD, Clean up, Project tagging to being a vandalism watchdog for Nigerian related pages. I have believe i can successfully coordinate the activities of WP Nigeria. I believe that the long-term measure of our success is based on our ability to create high-quality articles. I support all course of action to facilitate this: through assessment, tagging articles to know issues with page and collaborative community efforts to bring articles up to Wikipedia standard.
